Sway? Given that two candidates were murdered, yes... I’d say that ‘sway’ was a bit of an understatement.
But we want folks looking for a new life free from the oppression of their old countries.

I thought the Clintons fixed this.
I remember 1968 and the murder of Bobby Kennedy. The news media and politicians demanded stronger gun control like in Mexico.
One letter to the editor pointed out that more people were murdered in Mexico with knives than with guns in the US.
The Editor replied that the reason was Mexico had a cult of “Macho” and we did not have it here.
Well, it’s here now and stronger in Mexico. I believe a couple of years ago several potential mayoral candidates in Mexico were also murdered by the cartels.
And it is NOT *vigilante violence* when people defend themselves because the government won’t.
The leftists don’t whine about *vigilante* anything when it’s gangs, cartels, or human traffickers who are doing it against joe average citizen who just wants to be left alone, work for a living, and raise their family in peace.
Honestly, this push to protect criminals just fries me.

What you say is true. But, the “average citizen” needs to adjust to a changing environment. If you live in the city, gone are the days when you could walk downtown at night, or leave your door unlocked, or give a stranger a ride.
Today, it is best to let the criminals and their perpetual victims have their space. Mostly they kill each other or the stupid people who think its ok to get high and stop down to the local open air drug market to score some weed. Or let their 14 year old daughter go to a rap club on the other side of town.
A smart “average citizen” can make his life and life style pretty secure. Maybe not as free as 1957 but unlikely to be touched by serious crime. It just takes some effort.
