A tech billionaire is quietly buying up land in Hawaii. No one knows why

Waimea is primarily an agricultural town with just three stoplights and around 10,000 residents. It has lush forests filled with guava trees and torch ginger, and it's known for being the birthplace of the Hawaiian cowboy, or paniolo. It sits thousands of feet above sea level, where misty winds often blow sideways and, on clear days, give way to expansive views of the island's three towering volcanoes.

Over the last couple of years, a mystery has been brewing in this small mountain town. Someone has been quietly buying hundreds of acres of land...

He's the CEO and co-founder of San Francisco-based Salesforce, one of the world's largest software companies, which owns the popular messaging service Slack and is worth nearly $300 billion. He also owns Time magazine. Benioff is hard to miss — the 59-year-old stands at a towering 6 feet, 5 inches and is often seen driving around Waimea in his white Hummer pickup, sporting his signature look of a baseball cap with his curly brown hair tumbling out back.

Benioff lives in a beachside mansion down the mountain from Waimea. He built the $24.5 million, 9,800-square-foot home about 20 years ago and also bought dozens of acres of ranch land in Waimea around that time, according to public records.

Jeff Bezos owns a sprawling beach mansion in Maui. Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg has plans to build a bunker on his land in Kauai, according to Wired. Benioff's former boss, Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison, owns 98% of Lanai.

Along with the land they probably bought out the politicians there too. They must be expecting the continental US to be in shambles in the not too distant future.

He wants to own the island and get the b=rabble off so when TSHTF, there will be no one to go after him. He thinks he’s going to be safe that way.

He reckons without God.

Gee... There is a "tropical paradise".

Billionaires are looking for a place to stash billions in value, so it won't disappear in a stock market crash or currency hyper inflation.

Surprise! Surprise! They buy lots of valuable land far from the source of most of the troubles!

Who would have thought it?

No one knows why

Seriously? The guy is worth billions, already has a house nearby, and they can't understand why he wants to buy open, pastureland acreage in a beautiful spot with a fantastic climate?

You have to spend it on something... this person is probably buying real estate all over the world. I would. Real estate is a great inflation hedge.

It’s a win/win for these creeps.

If Globohomo endures, they and their progeny will be at the top of the global heap and suck up the final fruits of human achievement as the rest of the world is trodden underfoot.

Should Globohomo collapse under the weight of its own dystopic madness, they and their progeny will survive as the feudal lords of paradise.

Benioff has often been in the news here, helping with this & that community issues, needs, and insufficiencies. He has donated quite a lot towards our County fire department rescue equipment With the chronic funds shortfalls, that has helped

Safest place in breakdown of society scenario. Nobody can easily get there. So once the locals are taken care of or eliminated they’re safe.

I thought Haolis couldn’t buy land in Hawaii, but could only have a 99 year lease. I guess if you have enough money no rules apply to you.

He should enjoy his wealth and power while he still can, because his eternity won’t be so enjoyable, unless he turns to Jesus before it’s too late.
