AG suing Arizona landlords for 'corrupting' market, colluding to keep rents high

PHOENIX — Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes is suing several owners of apartment complexes throughout the Valley for allegedly engaging in illegal "price-fixing" and creating a mechanism that's exacerbated Arizona's housing crisis.

The state's top legal official announced Wednesday her office had filed a lawsuit against nine major residential apartment landlords in Arizona and RealPage Inc. for allegedly conspiring to inflate rental rates and eliminate competition in the market.

"One reason renters in the Phoenix and Tucson metropolitan areas are paying more is because RealPage has facilitated a price-fixing conspiracy among a large share of multifamily apartment lessors in Arizona," the lawsuit states.

At a time when Valley cities have reported significant rent increases, the landlords in the lawsuit are accused of working together to set prices rather than independently assess what to charge their tenants.

Ridiculous! One tenant interviewed says her rent went up from $1450 a month in 2019 to $1750 now and will join the class action lawsuit! Hasn't she heard of Biden-flation? My insurance, property taxes, utilities and maintenance/construction costs completely skyrocketed after 1/20/21.

Perhaps a free market ought to decide what rents are whether it is a rental, home price, commercial space and so forth. Or more likely the commies want to price-fix so they can cram 30 illegals in an apartment.

The lawfare game must be ended. The weaponizers must learn that when they are dead, they can’t prevail.

Deport every last illegal and watch the *housing crisis* resolve itself as properties become available and the free market works and prices stabilize or drop.

Only US citizens should be allowed to own land.

History repeats itself. Mom and Pop landlords (Kulaks) are the targets.

My insurance went up more than that just last year.

I would like to see these landlords sit down and calculate what rent should be for their units, without local competition. These bureaucratic nitwits may be in for a shock.

Concur 100% and then some.

Also, allowed to rent.

“Only US citizens should be allowed to own land.”

I tend to think foreign ownership should be based on reciprocity based on Amendment XIV equal protection of the law.

Chinese citizens would not be able to own urban land. Chinese citizens could only own farmland in common and only if they lived on or near it.

Mexican citizens would not be able to own land near the border or coasts.

That’s a great idea if there is actually a free market. But this is the US. There is no such thing.

The trade is not equal. China is vastly a dump, and not worthy of equality or trust.

The purpose of the accusations and lawsuit is to cover up BeijingBiden’s deliberate inflation.

It is a kind of victim card scam.

That interviewed chick is a low example. I know folks whose rents went up nearly 50%. The market got insane. And oddly enough none of the big companies went lowball to get the volume. Wouldn’t surprise me if there was collusion.

The lawsuit is probably based on illogical logic similar to Obama’s “disparate impact” theory of “wrongdoing”, on no more evidence than many landlords have had similar rent increases. The lawfare DA can’t admit that different landlords can make similar assessments about their own cost increases.
