Oops, I mixed up the Trump cases. The two Carroll verdicts were in federal court, so the state courts will have no role in any appeal. The federal courts will, however, follow basically the same rules about jury verdicts and collateral estoppel.
It’s the appeal from the fraud judgment (Justice Engoron) that will go up through the state system. It won’t get to SCOTUS until the appeals through the state courts are exhausted, and even then only if SCOTUS agrees to accept it for review. At that stage there’s no appeal as of right.
I have a feeling that dems are going to use this in political ads.
