Republican Ousted From Office by College Student After Nearly 20 Years
Newsweek ^ | 3/6/24 | Kaitlin Lewis

A21-year-old college student is headed to November's general election after beating out a longtime state House representative in North Carolina's Republican primary on Tuesday.

Wyatt Gable, who is earning his bachelor's degree at East Carolina University, defeated North Carolina State House Representative George Cleveland by just under 2 percentage points, garnering support from a shade under 51 percent of Republican voters. The newcomer will now face Democrat Carmen Spicer in November for North Carolina's District 14 seat in the state House of Representatives.

"I just think it came down to people wanting a fresh set of ideas," Gable said after his win Tuesday night. "It took a lot of hard work by me and my team. A lot of doors were knocked, and phone calls were made."

Cleveland, 84, was seeking his 11th term in the state House Tuesday night and brought a wealth of experience to the table. He's been in office since 2005 and his legislative work has centered around personal freedom, low taxes and a business-friendly climate. Under Republican leadership, he credits his party for the state's top business ratings and financial stability.

On the other hand, Gable represents a younger generation seeking to bring fresh perspectives to the legislature. Gable markets himself as someone with insight into the public education system, given that he only graduated from high school a few years ago. He also promotes his time as a Turning Point USA president at his university, gaining experience with the conservative cause, including preventing bathroom policy changes.

“I just think it came down to people wanting a fresh set of ideas,”

I don’t know anything about this race but I often hear this comment or some variant of it. What I never hear are these wondrous “new ideas”. Is tax reform a new idea? Is efficiency in government a new idea? What new ideas?

“He also promotes his time as a Turning Point USA president at his university”

Charlie Kirk will probably mention this today on his show, the dividends of an early investment of these young people are paying off.

You pose good questions and they should answered by results of the candidate. An old-time republican reminds me of the ‘establishment GOPe uniparty’ of which is most often despised and next to impossible to get rid of so maybe this kid can offer some advice on how to help remove this deep-state scum at the national level.

GOPee'ers are losing to nobodies, public non-entities, folks we don't know. That's how despised the establishment republican party is [how do you have a political party when you deliberately undermined your base of support?].

It's awful for them. They aren't losing to democrats. They are losing to nobodies. Get a clue. Just clear out your stuff and go home. It's less embarassing than losing to an unwashed deplorable.

Yeah, I agree. He’s older than Biden. His mind may be ok, but realistically, he shouldn’t be there.

On the other hand, 21 may be a little TOO young…..

The position is for the state House of Representatives, not the federal one.

Don’t know what the age stipulation is for the state House. But it’s likely lower or he’d be disqualified. There may not be one at all.

I concur.

You’d really like someone with a little more life experience. Preferably someone who has signed the front of a paycheck.

Conversely, you’d like someone who actuarially will be around in a decade to experience the results of any laws he might pass.
