The trial is underway for a man accused in a 2021 quadruple murder in Tacoma.
Maleke Pate is charged with four counts of aggravated murder in the deaths of Raymond Williams, Natasha Brincefield, Emery Iese, and Maria Nunez. The shooting victims were identified in court documents and by the Pierce County Prosecuting Attorney's Office.
"Nothing, honestly, is going to bring any closure because our loved ones were taken," Lauvale Iese told KOMO News. Iese lost his wife, son and brother-in-law in the October 2021 shooting.
It was an emotional day of opening remarks in a Pierce County courtroom Tuesday that prompted tears from people seated in the public gallery.
The state first described a grisly crime scene as a senseless act of violence in Tacoma's Salishan neighborhood.
The man accused of pulling the trigger, Maleke Pate, appeared emotionless as the prosecutor described the shooting deaths of two men and two women in a driveway.
The prosecutor said Pate was a stranger who had no motive for violently killing the tight-knit family.
“Gunned them down with no cause, no emotion- killed them, execution style,” Pierce County Prosecuting Attorney Sunni Ko said.
In response, the defense told jurors the state's case is made up of circumstantial evidence, and no firm proof of Pate's involvement in the horrendous crime.
“You’re going to have to set aside the dramatic part of the story and the tragedy that exists here and do your job as jurors, which is to rule on the actual evidence you hear before you, and when you do, you’re going to end up coming back to the verdict of not guilty,” Defense Attorney Travis Currie said.
The state adds that jurors will later be hearing evidence, including the dramatic 911 call made by a woman who was renting a room upstairs from the family. She allegedly heard rapid gunfire and then saw the gunman and the victims out her window.
Plus, more information will be given about a gun allegedly found in Pate's home that the prosecution claims forensics has tied to the nine bullet casings found at the crime scene. The state's witnesses are scheduled to speak Wednesday.
Iese said his family was told they might never know why their loved ones were killed, but they believe a conviction for the person responsible would help bring justice for their family.
"If we'll never know why, then then next best thing is for him to be in prison, not only for us but so he won't hurt anybody else anymore," Iese explained. “My wife leaves behind not only the rest of her kids, but also a baby. And for him, I want justice to be served.”
My wife teaches in Salishan, and taught this monster's sisters.
Just another case of White Rural Rage./s.
Maleke.....................
Is this POS an illegal?
There is a Pate Valley in Yosemite National Park. I doubt that the defendant is related to the person Pate Valley is named for.
defense: alleged eye witness, alleged gun found in allged possession, alleged match of murder bullets from allegedly possessed gun ... my prediction: jury reaches verdict in under three hours ...
Subhuman.
This is 1000000x worse than a felon dying of Fentanyl who was resisting arrest over passing fake money.
Where is Rachel Maddow? Joe Biden? Obama?
Wrong narrative.
I hate the media.
