Some people are having trouble catching on.
There are two local speed traps on the interstate in our area. Every week the local paper reports at least a couple of traffic stops resulting in arrest and confiscation of drugs, guns and money. Usually lots of money. The local sheriff periodically tells us how the confiscated dirty money is put to good use in buying a new patrol car, bullet proof vests, training and other essential law enforcement goodies for the department. Rest assured though, all that criminal money is put to great use in service to the pubic. They explode in multiple stops then go back to the lair to wait quietly for the next round of victims. It is amazing how they can stop so many and never have to get very far from the restaurants in town.
Don't get me wrong, I like to see them round up speeders and criminals but their motivation feels a little suspicious. They are much more enthusiastic in their work than their tradition would uphold.
Everybody gets in on the act out on the interstate. It is like a cop convention at the cross overs. I went by last Wednesday night and they had one vehicle with spotlights that looked like Bert Gummer's Graboid Truck. It nearly blinded me as I drove by. Nobody wants to miss out on the fun and the red and blue lights are visible in active stops for at least 3 miles either direction. It's like a party. The minor players have single vehicle town cop stops all across the county but the big show is near the county seat and the little town coming into the county on the west side.
Out of all the confiscation that is going on do you wonder if all the money and stuff discovered all get reported and turned in? Do you think? Do you think there is a way that can be checked? Inquiring minds want to know.
Seriously. The biggest problem at the county commissioner's meetings is the lack of jail space for the insane and addicted, mostly meth heads. The state hospital won't take them or can't and so they are housed one to a cell where they wreck havoc smearing their excrement on the walls and other fun stuff. I've suggested a cluster of 20' containers as expedient cells. They can be easily equipped with a sanitary bucket and lined with plastic freezer liners. An alleyway to a cesspool could be positioned between long lines of containers facing the alleyway and the back of the containers could be equipped with hatches for water cannon for bathing and clean out purposes. The confiscation fund could go a long way to solving lots of problems.

Keep in mind, these people know that if they get caught with large amounts of cash, it will be confiscated. I knew a guy who was a mule. He said getting caught is usually due to a snitch.
