If Trump is reelected, Americans are planning to flee in droves

…….. Every four years, as Americans gird themselves to choose a president, there's talk, mainly among Democrats, of leaving the country. I'm off for Canada if unacceptable candidate X wins! And every four years, the promised exodus fails to materialize. It's mostly just therapeutic venting.

This time is different.

The alarm over Trump's potential triumph in November is far starker than the fears stoked by past presidents. "A Trump dictatorship is increasingly inevitable," a recent Washington Post headline warned. The Atlantic devoted an entire issue to the authoritarian horrors in store for America "If Trump Wins." Every four years or so, Gallup asks Americans ages 15 and up: "Ideally, if you had the opportunity, would you like to move PERMANENTLY to another country?" At the end of George W. Bush's presidency, the number responding "yes" was 11%. During Barack Obama's tenure, it was 10%. During Trump's presidency, it hit 16%. That's some 40 million Americans who wanted to leave their country behind, for good.

……….

In fairness, those who flee America to escape MAGA may find themselves confronted by a host of unpleasant surprises. The headaches start with the red tape. On any given day, my Expats in Italy Facebook group teems with the sort of questions that can drive a novice foreign-property owner batty. Why won't my Italian utility company let me pay my bill with a US credit card? (Answer: Because it won't.) Property bidders must have their offers officially registered with the local municipality and verified by the godlike person known as the "notaio," an official of ancient standing who drafts and authenticates the raft of documents for a fair-size fee.

In earnest contemplation, I have deliberated upon various options such as departure, relocation, or immigration, particularly amid the societal upheaval triggered by the events surrounding George Floyd’s death and the Black Lives Matter movement. However, it is imperative to note that my considerations were not influenced by the incumbent President but rather by a concern for mitigating the escalating turmoil. As the upcoming election looms, I remain cognizant of the potential ramifications. Recollecting past demonstrations, including the unreported protests and the mobilization symbolized by the “pussy hat brigades,” I contemplate the potential aftermath should legal maneuvers fail to achieve desired outcomes.

For an extensive duration, I have maintained the belief that the political left invariably resorts to street violence as a means to suppress dissent and curtail freedoms—an assertion substantiated by historical precedents. Consequently, I anticipate an escalation in such tactics regardless of whether the presidency is held by Trump or Biden.

The stakes of the impending election are substantial, as both candidates present divergent visions for the nation’s trajectory. Irrespective of the electoral outcome, the United States faces an array of challenges, ranging from internal civil unrest to the specter of global conflict, all of which imperil the well-being of its citizenry.
Regrettably, the ideological disarray within the Democratic Party exacerbates these concerns, raising doubts about the caliber of leadership it can offer. Indeed, the party’s selection of nominees prompts reflection on whether they represent the pinnacle of its capabilities, particularly in addressing the exigencies of the nation.

Recently, while commuting to an appointment, I encountered a disconcerting instance of gaslighting on a liberal talk radio program. The guest, an author, espoused the narrative that conservative parents’ involvement in educational matters, particularly their opposition to Critical Race Theory (CRT), constitutes a menace to societal progress. This portrayal not only dismisses the valid concerns of parents but also denigrates their capacity to engage in discourse concerning their children’s education, despite evidence suggesting that prevailing curricular narratives may be detrimental. The encounter served as a stark reminder of the ideological chasm pervading societal discourse.

Contemplating the prospect of leaving the United States in search of greater freedom seems futile, as the global landscape offers scant refuge. The imperative lies in confronting the challenges within our own Nation.

I hear Madagascar is nice this time of year. I mean the SS once thought about sending the Jews of Europe there, and since Trump is obviously Hitler reincarnated…

I keep waiting for them to make good on their claims to leave. Sadly, they disappoint me every time by not doing so. I’ve even offered to pay airfare for some of them on condition that they never return. No takers.

Good! And if they said they’d leave, but don’t, then give them helicopter rides until they are well off the coasts.

Wanting to leave and actually carting their butts away are two different things. Let’s hope they show some strength of character for once and follow through with their promises. If enough leave, imagine the improvements to the US. It would be wonderful!

AGAIN?

Somehow I think Americans was NOT the word intended here, but one that starts with "M".
