U.S. spies and cops are vacuuming up huge amounts of data about Americans from data brokers — a trend that puts us on a dangerous path already trodden out by authoritarian regimes such as China.
In America, we curtail government powers and guarantee civil liberties by limiting the amount of information citizens provide to the state. Police need a warrant to strap a GPS device on your car or listen to your telephone calls.
Intelligence agencies and military units are banned from targeting Americans for surveillance and are supposed to focus their attention overseas.

It’s not paranoia if it’s real.
“US Companies Are Selling Your Personal Data — to the Government!”
LOL, I remember some people on this site thinking they could actually TRUST large companies not to spy on them. So, when they find out that Wells Fargo is spying on them, they feel smug because they have Bank of America. LOL.
Idiots!
(and no, I’m not referring to you, Nick)
You can’t sue the government but can you sue the companies?
“You can’t sue the government but can you sue the companies?”
Chances are they disclose it in the fine print. Don’t like their policies, use a mattress for your money.
That’s pretty much the situation. What needs to have is to make it a CRIME to disclose this information unless authorized by the person affected, or (maybe) a court order.
Plus, require the information be destroyed after a certain amount of time, in case the government changes its laws (think Patriot Act).

Back in the day when I was growing up we used feed sacks
that held chicken food. My dad raised the chicks for the
eggs which he sold to wholesalers/processors.
Can’t sell much of my personal data, nor would anyone want it. I get Social Security, and a State Government Pension, own nothing, no property, no investments, no savings. Nada! If they wanted to watch me, they’d have to be satisfied with my running to the bathroom 15 times a day.
I used TaxAct for ten years, until I found out they were selling customer data. I now use my company’s tax program, a nice employee benefit. We don’t sell anything to the government. Our C suite are personally involved in over 150 partnerships, last thing they’re going to do is increase their visibility with the IRS.
Smart! But given that we now have can get some returns on our money, banks are costly to avoid!
They’re not selling my data.
I use Linux. No Apple here, no Google here, and no Windows.
I’m free!

Can’t trust ‘em because they can have bugs.
