Delays, violent crime: Report card on NYC subway reveals a system in crisis

If you slogged around during the first month of 2024 on the subways, you probably felt like there was a major delay every way you turned, and when you did get on the train, you were one wrong flicker of eye contact away from being a crime victim.

With subway ridership hovering around 71% of pre-COVID normal, bus ridership at 60% of normal, and commuter rail at about three-quarters, we don’t want to lose any more riders to bad service or fear.

But keeping straphangers riding the MTA will take work, just as the system has never felt more imperiled. So imperiled, in fact, that New York Gov. Kathy Huchul announced this past week that she’s calling in the National Guard to keep passengers safe.

This is New York: pay $15 toll if you drive, get mugged or killed if you take the subway, go to jail if you defend yourself.

National Guard? The criminals still roam free outside the mass transport systems. They’ll get you when leaving those Guard protected zones. Where’s Bernhard Goetz when you need him?

So steady as she goes? Everything’s peachy?

I wonder how many of the remaining subway users are the poor and elderly living in dangerous urban areas, fearful every minute but trapped and unable to afford better or safer living.

Not excited to be climate change friendly by deciding not to drive their BMWs to commute.

Not that bad. It was worse during the '70s, '80s, early '90s before Rudy cleaned it up.

Now it sucks but it's still not that bad, hard to believe.

The point is that if you have somebody like Rudy Guliani or Nayib Bukele, you can clean up a place really quick. Broken windows theory is real.

With subway ridership hovering around 71% of pre-COVID normal, bus ridership at 60% of normal, and commuter rail at about three-quarters...

Those workers who left New York during the pandemic and began working remotely... They are not coming back. I would think Hochul and Adams would have figured that out. Further, lax punishment of criminals - if indeed there is any punishment at all - has made the subways unsafe and more people are avoiding them.

Use yer noggin.

If they’d vote for this, why does NYC now have RCV?

Have you seen the pics of the bag checks being conducted?

Looks to be operating the same way the TSA does.

Pick the people the LEAST likely to be a threat to the public to pick on.
