Is extending life by weeks worth the toll some cancer drugs take? Doctors push for 'common-sense oncology' (The slippery slope of state sanctioned euthanasia.)

People may celebrate a 2-week improvement in survival without acknowledging costs

Tom Somerville's decision to stop medical treatment for his end-stage cancer was a personal one.

Somerville, 62, was diagnosed with colon cancer in 2021 that later spread to his liver. He had six months of chemotherapy to slow down the cancer, which he said also left him exhausted with nausea.

The Kingston, Ont., resident decided to take a break from treatment to enjoy a trip with his wife to Victoria.

"Things that you cherish change, right?" Somerville said. "I used to love being out in the bush, but now it is just nice to have a sunny day, sit with my family [and] have visitors."

Somerville said he came to terms with his prognosis and decided to enjoy the rest of the life he has left, extending the chemo break to a full stop. He said he was relieved to not "feel crappy" from the treatment anymore.

Dr. Christopher Booth, Somerville's medical oncologist at Kingston General Hospital, supports him in his decision.

Booth is also part of a group of cancer doctors in Canada and the U.S. who say medications with marginal benefits are overused for patients in the end stage of the disease. The oncologists have started a campaign through their website, journal articles and podcasts encouraging honest conversations about use of the drugs with cancer patients, their families and experts.

The goal of what they call "common-sense oncology" is to prioritize treatments that meaningfully improve survival and quality of life. They aim to address what they see as problems in the field, such as a lack of critical thinking in oncology training, falling standards for drug approvals and avoidance of end-of-life discussions...

Many treatments serve not to prolong life, but to prolong death.

Many treatments serve not to prolong life, but to prolong DYING.

Improved.

By your logic every Church Cemetery is filled with faith-less (or at best less than faith-full) people.

No. Just no. I’ve heard phonies like you preaching this nonsense and you are all just...PHONIES! You mouth this garbage as if no one ever heard it before - and as if no one had ever put it to the test and found it utter garbage.

“30 Large crowds came to him, bringing with them the lame, the blind, the crippled, the dumb, and many other sick people, whom they placed at Jesus’ feet; and he healed them.”

No kidding. Jesus healed many, miraculously. Ever wonder why? Ever wonder what the point was? It was to show us that the One who could heal their bodily infirmities - miraculously, instantly, in front of large crowds of witnesses - could heal them of sin. Are you suggesting YOU do likewise? And if not, why not?

” 24 Christ himself carried our sins in his body to the cross, so that we might die to sin and live for righteousness. It is by his wounds that you have been healed. 25 You were like sheep that had lost their way, but now you have been brought back to follow the Shepherd and Keeper of your souls.” - 1 Peter 2

This is very obviously NOT about physical healing! So we might live for righteousness! You were lost but have been “brought back to follow the Shepherd and Keeper of your souls.” Not about physical healing!

Luke 4: “38 Jesus left the synagogue and went to Simon’s home. Simon’s mother-in-law was sick with a high fever, and they spoke to Jesus about her. 39 He went and stood at her bedside and ordered the fever to leave her. The fever left her, and she got up at once and began to wait on them.”

Again, yes, Jesus healed people miraculously. Whenever He wanted. Do you? If not, then what is your point?

Jeremiah 33: “ I have turned away from this city because of the evil things that its people have done. 6 But I will heal this city and its people and restore them to health. I will show them abundant peace and security. 7 I will make Judah and Israel prosperous, and I will rebuild them as they were before. 8 I will purify them from the sins that they have committed against me, and I will forgive their sins and their rebellion.”

Again, He promises to restore Israel and Jerusalem and bring it back, purifying them from their rebellion. What is your point? Do you miraculously heal strangers by your faith? Frankly, if someone broke your leg with a baseball bat, COULD YOU HEAL IT INSTANTLY?

You people are all just phonies.

What I’ve said isn’t based on logic it’s based on the word of God. He said he has healed all of our sicknesses and diseases. He does not say that we don’t die of old age unlike your twisting of what I’m saying and certainly of what the word says. I highly recommend you actually read the word of God and know his promises because you will then change your mind

“When Canada’s Supreme Court decided that euthanasia was an acceptable solution, I wonder if they realized how many people they would be condemning to an earlier death with such a decision?”

What kills cancer patients in Canada is delays in treatment from socialized medicine.

But it is a fair point, in my opinion, but who decides how much is spent on treatment?

If its “free” then the decision is different than if it is “out-of-pocket”.

The question and answers are as complex as people. Ive seen folks leave survivors destitute chasing long-shot treatments. Ive seen others accept the inevitable truth of a terminal illness.

As much as folks want to perch on the moral high-ground, there is a practical limit to medical costs if we are being honest. In our upcoming era of government austerity, we will face this issue more frequently. If you dont have the money, socialism wont be able to ride in to save you with high-cost treatments.

Is it fair? Depends on whether it is someone important to you or not.

I know His Word and His promise, and “if for this life only we have hoped in Christ then we of all people are most to be pitied”.

That entire scripture is about those that don’t believe in the resurrection. Has nothing to do with leading pitiful lives of being sick and diseased.

It has everything to do with “health and wealth” heretics who forget that the ultimate healing and true treasure is found in Heaven.

“You sure do work hard to prove that Jesus is a liar”

JESUS didn’t lie. People who take single verses totally out of context and promote idea that puff themselves up do.

I pray that the holy spirit opens the eyes of truth in your heart to what the word of God says. So much effort to Discount and dismiss what the overall word of God says is not from God.
