The best agreements are bilateral. Multilateral agreements may be more convenient in the short term, but they lead to all sorts of strange bedfellows in the long run.

I support Israel but joining NATO would open a huge can of worms. I don’t see that ever happening.
I think it’s an excellent idea as Israel is the largest part of the root of the west, all it’s progress, achievements and advancement.

If Israel could join NATO then they would be controlled NATO.

NATO should be reformed so that ALL democratic countries can be a part of it, and so that there are real incentives for member countries to meet their obligations.
In the case of Israel, it would be prudent for Jordan to be considered simultaneously; and, perhaps also Malaysia and Indonesia.
As overpowering as NATO already is, an expanded, worldwide mutual defense agreement among democracies would not only be impregnable, it would encourage borderline democratic countries to qualify for membership.
It could be the Dawning of the Age of Aquarius.
