If you need an indication that you messed up the handling some device, substitute a flash bulb or firecracker for the explosive.

Saw this thread and it brought back to mind an old TV show from 1961. Dick Powell Theater “Ricochet” in which troops are training to disarm mines using a bayonet as a probe. A goof off smart a$$ private hits the center and “Boom!”
