Steve Mnuchin, the Treasury secretary under the Trump administration, said Thursday that he is organizing a group to buy TikTok as a bill proceeds through Congress that would force the popular social media app to either be sold or be banned.
"I think the legislation should pass and I think it should be sold," Mnuchin said on CNBC's "Squawk Box," one day after the House of Representatives passed a bipartisan bill that would force the ByteDance, TikTok's Beijing-based parent company, to sell the video app.
"It’s a great business and I’m going to put together a group to buy TikTok," he also said. "This should be owned by U.S. businesses. There’s no way that the Chinese would ever let a U.S. company own something like this in China."
The bill has yet to pass the Senate or the president's desk to become law.

I understand “why” Tik Tok is not good for the country. But to see the government pass legislation that forces companies to give up their business after the investment has been made…and sell those businesses to their crony friends just seems wrong.

TikTok does not do anything that every other social media company does and to the exact same extent, except for one thing. TikTok does not allow the FBI and CIA to have a backdoor and to demand censorship.

Facebook doesn’t download information from other apps on your phone. Tik Tok does. They can look and filter a ton of information that the other services upload.
One a one-off basis, the information is pretty mundane. But if you can filter out the people who are “This category of person” and who have “This app” on their phone and the “Location” of those people…you can draw some interesting information.
Remember when people could tell something was going on at the Pentagon when pizzas were ordered? Tik Tok is that on super steroids. The others are not.
