More than 1,000 drones per month are crossing into US airspace near the border with Mexico, a top general told lawmakers Thursday.
The number of unmanned drone incursions is “alarming” and presents a “growing” potential threat to national security, Air Force Gen. Gregory Guillot, the commander of North American Defense Command and US Northern Command, said during a Senate Armed Services Committee hearing.
“The number of incursions was something that was alarming to me as I took command last month,” Guillot said in response to a question from Sen. Ted Budd (R-NC).
“I don’t know the actual number – I don’t think anybody does – but it’s in the thousands,” he added.
When pressed by Budd on the timeframe the general was using to make his estimation, Guillot responded, “We can probably have over 1,000 a month.”
The top NORAD official noted that while the number of incursions alarms him, he hasn’t “seen any of them manifest in a threat to the level of national defense.”
“But I see the potential only growing,” Guillot warned.
Mexican cartels have been using drones to track the location of authorities along the US-Mexico border in order to more easily smuggle humans and drugs, according to US Customs and Border Protection officials.
Rio Grande Valley Sector Chief Patrol Agent Gloria Chavez told the House Oversight Committee in February of 2023 that in her Texas sector alone, more than 10,000 drone incursions and 25,000 drone sightings had been reported in the last year.
“The adversaries have 17 times the number of drones, twice the amount of flight hours and unlimited funding to grow their operations,” Chavez told lawmakers.

“seen any of them manifest in a threat to the level of national defense”
Hilarious.
Drone attacks by Mexican trafficking gangs aren’t a national security threat? What is then? Thermonuclear illegal immigrants?
Sheriffs were denied the technology to handle this a few weeks so.
Every sheriff should start deputizing good men who are fathers and husbands with Biblical morals.
I’d wager a lot of those drones are dropping dope into the US for pickup by mules already in the USA.
Very hard to stop.
No Bullets
But the Ukraine 5000 miles away overseas is more important than Americans.
President George Washington was prophetic when he said we should avoid any long-term treaties and engagements with foreign countries.
Much easier said than done.
Difficult to detect.
Very small.
Short flight time.
Get with the Program General, you can’t have a War on Drugs, without Drugs.
The cartels have ordered us to stand down.
We are in an active invasion by foreign enemies, in other words, at war, and Chomo Biden and his merry band of degenerate marxists have to get the bad orangeman. Nothing else matters to them.
Is there any legitimate reason why they can’t start shooting them down? After all, they are in our airspace illegitimately are they not?
Nothing to see here. Move along.
You do realize how high a drone can fly, don't you? Too high for a shotgun, and too high for a rifle to hit. (Not to mention the dangers of shooting a rifle up into the air.)
What is needed is military grade drone-jamming equipment to bring them down.
them
down
Exactly. I don't want to hear some simp in a general's uniform whining about the number of drones crossing over the border. Let's hear about how many they shot down.
Hell, Civil Air Patrol cadets in Cessna's with shotguns could do the job this general won't do.
“It is a very effective method of smuggling.”
And much cheaper than building a coke submarine.

Silly people - we all know the USA’s borders are in Ukraine, Syria, Somalia and Taiwan.
I’m not that concerned about Mexican gangs using drones for recon. I’m concerned about this threat. From the NYTs
“On Tuesday and Wednesday, Ukrainian drones hit four Russian refineries, officials on both sides said, adding to a series of recent attacks that have set fire to depots, fuel tanks and other oil infrastructure across Russia. Since the beginning of the year, Ukraine has claimed responsibility for nearly a dozen such assaults, and local Russian authorities have reported five more.”
They are videos of US made Javelins being brandished on the Mexican border. If the gangs have access to those, they certainly have access to drones capable of damaging a U.S. nuclear power plant.
