Ukraine loan gains traction in GOP

Congressional Republicans are getting serious about one potential solution to the monthslong fight over Ukraine aid: packaging at least some of it as a loan.

The notion has been floating around for weeks, inspired by former president Donald Trump's recent statements that all U.S. foreign aid — not just to Ukraine — ought to be loaned, not given outright.

But the possibility is now being taken a lot more seriously. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) hinted at the new strategy Monday, posting online that he floated the prospect of a “no-interest, waivable loan” during a meeting in Kyiv with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

The loan option is being taken seriously in the House, as well, where Ukraine aid has been stalled for months. Some of Ukraine’s Republican defenders have taken the idea and shopped it to Speaker Mike Johnson. The speaker, according to people familiar with the talks, told them to put a proposal together, test the waters with their GOP colleagues and then — if the conference approves — perhaps they’ll pursue it.

Lindsey Graham involved.

If they pass this -even as a fake loan- it's a serious betrayal. I can't believe they're floating it.

End this war.

We need Trump

Good luck collecting when the Russians take over.

The Ukraine is a lost cause and has been for over a year.

Supporting Ukraine as much as possible to get a cease fire and negotiated end to the conflict is a great idea but anything that prolongs the war does nothing more than increase the death and destruction in Ukraine and adds more sunk coats to Russia, making their post war demands greater and peaceful settlement more painful and difficult. We have a war in Gaza that we cannot end and a war in Ukraine that we will not allow to end. We are in crazy world.

How does Graham keep getting elected in SC?

He is NO conservative.

He favors unlimited spending ONLY if its for his pet causes.

A total fraud and hypocrite.

He’s a disgrace but sadly there are many so called conservatives like him (some among us I’m equally sad to say...)

A loan which is never paid back is not a loan.

Actually, it’s Trump that is pushing the idea of making Ukraine Funding a loan.

Maybe the Russians will repay the loan after they roll into Kiev. Zelensky won’t care. He’ll be sipping mojitos on the beach of his newly purchased island someplace in the South Pacific.

And everyone who is awake knows this is a complete scam designed for the sole purpose of giving political cover to RINOs to give more tax money to Ukraine.

I agree, any money that is given to Ukraine will never be paid back, which is why it’s a terrible idea for anyone including Trump to be advocating for it.

If you are going to fund Ukraine, at least be honest about it and not hide behind the money being loans.

...and a loan sans collateral is like going back to 2008, or choose any time in the history of BAD loans.

It’s not based on sound lending principles, and thus...

speaking of lost causes, unworthy of even a bad loan. I give no permission to use what is stolen from me yearly for such purposes.

There were serious events in Syria that prompted Republicans to rethink the opposition to aid for Ukraine.

In effect, Iran made the failing and faltering Russia a surrogate on the order of Haas and Hezbollah and Houthi’s. The IDF was daily attacking and killing Iranian military officers and more importantly destroying supplies enroute to Hezbollah. The Iranian puppeteers have locations from which strings are manipulated but the puppeteers have no troops and most importantly, no air force in Syria.

There is far more to it than just loans to Ukraine

The IDF has been soundly kicking Iranian ass on a daily basis.

Russia has troops and air planes in Syria. Russia and Iran announced a formal alliance.

That announcement and the presence of Russian troops and actual flying jets on the Israel/Syria border changed everything, everywhere.

Rather than a betrayel, the actions are a realization of the fact that serious American enemies have actively joined forces and the threat must not be ignored.

Maybe a year ago, but now even that's out the window.

Those mealy mouthed betrayers are cooking up a way they think they can sell this pig in a poke and we will accept it.

It isn’t the people that are stupid, it is these liars.

Ukraine can sell territory to Hungary or Poland for cash.

Ukraine can collect income tax and wealth tax on non-resident citizens.

Ukraine can also sell war bonds to its people like the US did in WW2.
