Mexican president praises Pancho Villa for his 1916 attack on Columbus, New Mexico that killed 18

MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexico’s president on Tuesday praised Mexican revolutionary Francisco “Pancho” Villa for his 1916 attack on Columbus, New Mexico, a raid that killed 18 Americans, mostly civilians.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador called the attack “daring” and said “we should thank” Villa for it.

“We should thank Villa for, among other things, the daring feat of having attacked Columbus, New Mexico, to prevent what he considered acts of treason,” López Obrador said.

Mexico has long honored Villa in government textbooks and monuments, but that was for his domestic role in the 1910-17 Revolution that ousted dictator Porfirio Diaz. The Columbus attack was mostly related to Villa’s personal disputes, not the Revolution, and previous Mexican administrations had remained mostly silent about it.

López Obrador quoted his favorite historian, Pedro Salmerón, as saying the attack was “a symbol of resistance against imperialism.” It would not be the first time the president's fondness for Salmerón has caused problems.

Operation Wetback 2024

Seal the border...militarize it if necessary.

No more aid or trade with meheco.

Yes, close the border, if needed, with military. Cut all commerce until Mexico again agrees to take back deportees. Implement eVerify for all workers and enact Texas law nationally to allow all law enforcement to arrest and deport illegals. And deport any immigrant that commits any crime.

Didn’t President Wilson send General “Blackjack” Pershing after Poncho Villa?

“Mexican president praises Pancho Villa for his 1916 attack on Columbus, New Mexico that killed 18”

Perhaps so, but he opened an EXCELLENT RESTAURANT in The Mission.

(if you don’t know what I’m referring to, ask a human)

We should have our military lining the border and be launching drone strikes against the cartels daily.

“We should have our military lining the border and be launching drone strikes against the cartels daily.”

But then where would Hunter Biden get his fix?

The family story is, my grandfather rode into Mexico with Pershing after that NM raid by villa - I have no sauce.

My grandfather also went with Pershing “Over There”. Plenty of sauce for that. He lived in misery the rest of his life because of mustard gas. He would never talk about it. I was only 13 when he passed on so my memories are a tad fuzzy.

Historians have long debated the reason for Villa’s attack. University of Houston history professor José Ángel Hernández said it came as Mexico was locked in a violent civil war. Villa felt betrayed by President Woodrow Wilson, who Villa believed would recognize his rebel government, Hernández said.

It is pretty clear Woodrow Wilson was trying to play kingmaker among the Mexican factions.

Wilson seems to have promised Villa support, then reneged on the promise.

Wilson is one of the worst US Presidents, ever.

Seal the border? Maybe we should open the border wide enough for a great and praiseworthy general like Winfield Scott. This time when the Matines go through the Halls of Montezuma, maybe they should leave no stone unturned and no woman unwidowed.

So, let el Presidente go ahead and praise Pancho Villa. We can praise someone else when he does, though, can’t we?

At the end of the Mexican War some Mexican grandees tried to talk Scott into pushing the Polk administration into annexing Mexico. They had no faith they Mexican people could ever put together a government that would lurch from comandante to comandante. The Polk administration said no. They then tried to talk Scott into staying as dictator, he wisely said no thanks!

Not just that Wilson was playing favorites. Villa had the Mexican Army pinned into a 180 perimeter at Agua Prieta, with their backs up against the US border. Douglas Arizona was behind them.

Villa’s victory was certain. Wilson let the Mexican Army cross into Texas at Eagle Pass and board trains. They were transported by rail across Texas, New Mexico and into Douglas Arizona. The station was less than a mile from the border. The Mexican Army marched down the street in Douglas and crossed the border over into Mexico and into the perimeter. They brought ammo, artillery and machine guns.
The reinforced Mexican army gave Villa a bad defeat and he lost a lot of men.

Villa decided that if both sides of the border were in play for the Mexican Army, he would not worry much about the border either.
So he hit Columbus in a night raid. The US Army base in town fought back well and hard.

That was the first US Army combat use of the 1911 45 automatic.

Another thing about Villa. He was one of the very few that never tried to gain political power after the fight. He always fought, then went back home. Interesting guy of his time.

It's good to know how this guy thinks.

Indeed. But then we have known he has had solid leftist leanings since the beginning of his political career in 1976. The influence of his international allies has not been well publicized as a convenience for all parties.
