Why? Because, as they have more or less stated, it is to restore the former borders of the USSR. It has little to do with natural resources and everything to do with Russian national pride and the ego of ‘Shorty’ Putin.
“More or less stated” is imagination. It’s either stated or not stated, and if it’s not stated it’s imagination. This is not complex.
And so. Europe has nothing Russia wants. In fact, they have a great deal of various things Russia actively does not want. They add nothing to Russia’s standard of living. Oil and gas do that.
