So, Trump is back to discussing an abortion ban, now at 15 weeks.

Okay, a state issue, yes, but the federal government is involved. It allows, encourages, and in some cases pays for abortion, it promotes it overseas. So, yes, fair and necessary for president to say what the national role and stand is.

Can this be done and still allow state-level choices?

And for Republicans, any time this is on the ballot, they lose. A sobering point to consider.

...and just last month the Trump campaign dismissed reports he supported a ban on abortion. Here is an article on that: https://apnews.com/article/abortion-federal-ban-trump-2024-election-61c3edcd3780ce94be3bd8d65f100f23

So, what is driving the flip-flop or need to revisit and address the topic?

Unfortunately in this country even 15 weeks would be a losing battle. The anatomy scan is done at 20 weeks to find issues with the baby, the left will just say that 15 weeks is too soon to determine if there is a problem. I think its a mistake for Trump to even bring up abortion, just say that its left to the states and thats it

He's snatching defeat from the jaws of victory with that kind of talk.

Why can't he just say SCOTUS ruled it is a matter for the states and leave it at that?

If that were true Trump wouldn’t have won in 2016

15 weeks is basically what European countries have - unlike states here that never restrict abortion until birth.

The overturning of Roe and Casey said it was a state issue. We need to leave it up to the states or risk re-Federalizing the issue. Fight it at the local level. Better yet, fight for the hearts of the people involved.

Can this be done and still allow state-level choices?

It’s not supposed to allow for individual state choices, but let’s be real, the baby killing Democrats will cheat and still kill babies whenever they want to, including after birth.

Maybe not openly and everywhere, at least not at first, but they won’t stick with this nationwide, even if it got written into law.

Does anyone really think that the fedgov, especially when a Democrat is President, is going to send US marshals out to shut down cheating abortion clinics, or prosecute anyone for violating the law. Please.

And not only would the Democrats cheat, this would prevent states that want to outlaw abortion completely from being able to do so, at least legally.

MORE decisions need to be state decisions, not less, to dismantle the federal control of everything, as it allows a small number of people in Washington to control anything.

This whole idea stinks, and originates with Lindsey Graham.

I think it would be smarter for Trump to publicly say it’s a state issue, and just leave it at that. However, if he’s concluded otherwise, the approach he’s taking is probably the most sensible.

Notice he’s talking about coming up with a bi-partisan proposal, bringing people together, consensus, etc. In other words it will be up to Congress to negotiate a deal, and determine the ban (i.e. 15 week, 20 week, etc.). The thing is, the odds of Congress arriving at any consensus on abortion are almost zero. Basically Trump is saying, if Congress can agree to something that has wide-spread, bi-partisan support, whether it be 15 weeks, 20 weeks, he’d be inclined to sign it.

Interview audio

https://wabcradio.com/episode/donald-j-trump-45th-president-of-the-united-states-03-19-24/

Discussion about abortion begins 7:50.

Trump repeats his stance, which hasn't changed, there should be a limit and there should be exceptions

11:00 Trump repeats all the legal scholars on boths sides agree it's a state's issue, it shouldn't be a federal issue

Sounds like he will state what he thinks should occur nationally, but leave it up to the states on what they should do about abortion.
