Okay, a state issue, yes, but the federal government is involved. It allows, encourages, and in some cases pays for abortion, it promotes it overseas. So, yes, fair and necessary for president to say what the national role and stand is.

Unfortunately in this country even 15 weeks would be a losing battle. The anatomy scan is done at 20 weeks to find issues with the baby, the left will just say that 15 weeks is too soon to determine if there is a problem. I think it would be smarter for Trump to publicly say it’s a state issue, and just leave it at that. However, if he’s concluded otherwise, the approach he’s taking is probably the most sensible.
Notice he’s talking about coming up with a bi-partisan proposal, bringing people together, consensus, etc. In other words it will be up to Congress to negotiate a deal, and determine the ban (i.e. 15 week, 20 week, etc.). The thing is, the odds of Congress arriving at any consensus on abortion are almost zero. Basically Trump is saying, if Congress can agree to something that has wide-spread, bi-partisan support, whether it be 15 weeks, 20 weeks, he’d be inclined to sign it.
