Maybe some form of “rotating” term limits would be a better idea. Cant hold a public office after a term (or two) but if you did a good job you could always run again next time around.

12 years (2 contiguous terms) as Senator is enough. Then sit out for 6 years (1 term) before returning. If the politician is incapable of holding a private sector job during that time period. They could run for Gov, the House, county commissioner, mayor in the interim.

Repeal the 17th Amendment and term limits for senators might not be necessary. Every state legislator, governor, state grandee would see themselves as worthy of that office so I think there would be plenty of competition for it.

Repeal the 17th Amendment!
State legislatures can’t do worse!
