It helps them spy on and oppress the citizens who haven’t left yet.

People better weld their license plates onto their cars. They are going to be stolen at a mighty high rate.

This is good. I wish Oakland would do the same. This is how you recover stolen cars and stolen plates.

San Francisco’s Chief of Police Bill Scott said it will help officers catch alleged criminals and address homicides, robberies, assaults, car break-ins, and other crimes.
= = =
They track all liscence plates, and keep the data for xxxx days. Read the fine print on that.
So, if some crime occurs they can look back and see what cars were in the area at that time.
If they do get some plate info. for some crime, they can also put out an alert for it.
And they are linked to other towns who are on the same system. So a ‘hot plate’ from out of town can be detected and . . . I was going to say stopped, but this is SF.

the more social disintegration, the more liberty/privacy-restricting measures get imposed on all of us
each measure with a good-sounding rationale, to be sure...
but added together, it results in a more repressive society
not a favorable trend, imho

I am pretty confident that this new tactic for fighting crime will “disproportionately effect people of color”.
The only way to make this work is if the cameras also detect the race of the driver and give certain people some leeway.
It’s only fair.

license plate readers don’t prevent crime, though they can be useful helping to catch criminals after the fact *IF* they;re caught, put in jail with high bonds until trial, convicted, and then given hefty sentences, other these plate readers are just a propaganda tool: “See, we’re doing stuff about crime” ...

This is what leftist Marxists do....they install automatic ways to extract money from those who are cowed by them into severe obedience meanwhile enjoying the chaos that causes those cowed people to beg them to do more. This ends with our total destruction as the rule of law is near meaningless.

I live in DC. The police here have had license plate readers for years. I had assumed this was now pretty standard in big city police departments around the country, but maybe not.
