This seems like strange behavior for a guy with a stable job and family. How much of a profit could you be making if you paid full price for the guns, and sold them immediately? For most types of merchandise, you’d be taking a loss. The only way he could have been making money is by not being too picky about the sorts of people he sold them to, who would pay high prices because they couldn’t get a gun legally.

If he just wanted to make extra money, there are many side hustles that are perfectly legal and much safer.

Agreed — many oddities and contradictions in this.
The ATF affidavit is entirely credible, and Malinowski appears to be guilty of violating numerous laws without trying very hard to hide it. Did he not realize that the FFL handling his purchases had to keep a book of all their transactions, meaning ATF routine inspections would inevitably red flag him for buying in volume? Why would he ask buyers about their ages, and care about pistol-brace rules, yet flaunt that he didn’t do paperwork?

The guy either wanted to get caught, stubbornly refused to accept that gun laws are what they are, or somehow got off on leading a dual life of respected airport manager/illegal arms dealer. A person in charge of an international airport could get up to a LOT more dangerous and lucrative crimes. Why take huge risks and spend a lot of time for peanuts? (Maybe he had airport scams going that he didn’t get caught for...yet).
