I remember over 50 years ago, the city on New York decided to get rid of all the guns confiscated or used in crimes. They loaded three US Coast Guard Cutters full of guns, antique and modern, took them out to sea and dumped them in deep water.
I also remember a TV show at that time in which a West Coast city took all their confiscated guns and also dumped them in the ocean in deep water.
Another (The Streets of San Francisco) in which a .25 cal pistol escaped it’s owner, went on a killing spree till caught and melted down into a sewer cover.
Great shows of “stopping crime” without stopping crime.
