As a generality, what has formerly kept politicians in line and the way they are held accountable for their actions was the vote. The fear of not being re-elected is a politician's greatest concern, a concern far, far above everything and anything else.
But votes don't matter any more and the outcome of elections is predetermined. So, just as with unelected bureaucrats who have no fear of ever being fired or in any way held accountable no matter what they do and no matter how many people they hurt, voters can no longer hold politicians accountable for anything.
