SHREVEPORT, La. - The voters have spoken, and Henry Whitehorn will be taking over the Caddo Parish Sheriff's Office this summer. He'll be the first African American to hold the position.

It was well into Sunday morning before all of the votes were counted, the last batch being absentee votes. Whitehorn beat John Nickelson with 53 percent of the votes. According to the Louisiana Secretary of State's Office, the unofficial numbers are Whitehorn with 34,752 votes and Nickelson with 30,487. Voter turnout was 42 percent.

Both Whitehorn and Nickelson addressed supporters at their watch parties.

Candidates John Nickelson and Henry Whitehorn began their race for Caddo sheriff last fall. A one-vote victory by Whitehorn in November landed the election results in court. A judge determined illegal votes were cast so a new election was ordered.

Interest in this race was very high with record numbers of people turning out for early voting.

Nickelson had the support of former Sheriff Steve Prator. In addition to practicing law for nearly two decades, Nickelson served on the Shreveport City Council representing District C.

Unbelievable!

I agree. How is it possible to announce the final results of an election the day after the voting? California is still counting votes from March 5.

“Voter turnout was 42 percent.”

For a Saturday one race election,42% turnout is high.

You got to organize, walk the blocks, make those phone calls, send the texts, speak with the church groups and get your people to the polls, even if you have to drive them.

Isn’t this the race where Nikelson won but a judge decided there had been cheating so he made them do it over? Guess the judge got the winner he wanted in the end.

I heard the winner, I think his name is Whitehorn, in an interview talk about how well received he was in the 60 churches he visited and how hard the pastors worked to get out the vote.

It is quite obvious the IRS has no teeth regarding the Johnson Amendment. It is time to get the churches involved in politics. The media must be off set and churches can be extremely formidable.
