Just heard on scanner monitoring Baltimore City Fire: there were 20 construction workers on the bridge at the time of the collapse.
For one thing, the UK is 4 hours ahead of EST, so at 1:30 in Baltimore, it was 5:30 AM. People would be up, or getting up whereas in Baltimore, NYC, etc., most are asleep. The MSM would have minimal staff working overnight, so the Brits would have better coverage at that time of day.

The Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, Maryland which crosses the Patapsco River has reportedly Collapsed within the last few minutes after being Struck by a Large Container Ship; a Mass Casualty Incident has been Declared with over a Dozen Cars and many Individuals said to be in the Water.
The BBC has the story going live on channel 346 on Directv, including the video of the bridge collapsing.
I have lived in Maryland. This is huge. The bridge is part of the Baltimore Beltway. Now, traffic from I-95 North going South will have to travel the west side of the Beltway or go through town - the only way around it. Also, this will blockade the harbor for some time to come.
WTOP, the premiere news radio station in the Baltimore/Washington area, has confirmed this.
“ WTOP has received word from petty officer Matthew West from the Coast Guard in Baltimore that it was a container ship flying under a Singapore flag that crashed into the bridge. The vessel, called “Dali,” was headed through Baltimore to Colombo, Sri Lanka, as its final destination, according to Marine Traffic and Vessel Finder maps and data.”
