Amassive cargo ship crashed into a major bridge in the Baltimore harbor early Tuesday morning, leading to a near-total collapse of the span and sending vehicles plunging into the frigid water below. A search-and-rescue effort is underway, with divers and emergency personnel desperately combing the area for people believed to have fallen from the collapsing bridge, officials said.

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore has declared a state of emergency following the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore. Only the roadways leading to the main span remain intact. Yeah, total.
I would have expected that shipping mishaps would have been factored into the design. Things do go wrong from time to time. What kind of protection did the bridge piers have? And is upgrading those barriers something that has been on the list of deferred projects for 20 years?

The may-day call which caused the bridge to halt traffic explains why there was no traffic on the bridge when seconds and minutes before there was quite a bit.

Pure speculation here but maybe someone was trying to ram the bridge and good people were trying to cut the power before impact.
