History may yet show that Trump became a better, more serious candidate when faced with the prospect of being challenged for the nomination from the right by DeSantis.

I know, some will argue that Trump was, and always has been, the perfect candidate from the time he ran for president in 2000.

I'm just not sure about that.

“some will argue that Trump was, and always has been, the perfect candidate from the time he ran for president in 2000.”

He’s far from perfect. But he is inevitable. Running against him this cycle was just plain stupid. DeSantis not only wasted tens of millions of dollars that would have been better spent on local races this year, he pissed away incalculable amounts of political capital with the Trump base.

If he’d just kept his mouth shut and run Florida until his term expires Trump would have snapped him up for a Cabinet position. He and Trump would have made a very formidable team.

Sadly, that won’t happen now.
