I recall a picture that illustrates France quite well.
It’s an image of some people during the fall of France to the Germans.
One man is crying, the woman in the middle -ish of the image is looking like “gee I dunno”, but there’s one guy who has this weird smug smirk as if he likes this brave new direction of the country.
