Indiana to build highway able to charge electric vehicles while moving

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WISH) — Indiana plans to rebuild a small section of highway that by next summer could charge electric vehicles being driven.

Purdue University and Indiana government’s Department of Transportation, in separate news releases issued Wednesday, touted the construction project as the first highway segment in the nation with wireless charging. Construction could begin as soon as April 1.

Neither Purdue or the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) reported how much the project will cost.

Indianapolis-based White Construction was awarded a contract to build the wireless power-transfer technology in a quarter-mile of U.S. 231/U.S. 52 between Cumberland Avenue and Lindberg Road in West Lafayette. That’s near the Walmart Supercenter and the INDOT West Lafayette regional office.

I’ve seen this type of application where a bus would park over a charging station at each bus stop. This is the most plausible situation in my opinion.

Well they did have flip phones on ST before we had flip phones. Not such a hair brained idea since this concept will be there to improve on. Necessity is the mother of invention so to improve on something you have to start somewhere. So, maybe in forty years it can be improved on to be economically feasible to build it nationwide. Just like the ICE cars of today are nothing compared to automobiles from 50 years ago.If they could perfect this technology along with infrastructure to carry the power load, not a bad idea.

Tinstaafl. There is no such thing as a free lunch. Most likely the under road charging system will provide some mode of electromotive resistance to the EV traveling over it, they slowing it down or making it harder to maintain speed.

I have a patent on a form of wireless charging - from the late 90s! Unless they’ve found some new physics, if you can get 90% efficiency you’re doing really well. Imagine how much power you’re throwing away by charging a big truck.

It’s a boondoggle. I’m a recovered academician. Whether it works or not is irrelevant. What’s important is how much grant money they got, how many papers they wrote and how many Ph.D.s did they graduate.

Mine doesn’t need charging.

Alhough I’ve got a rechargeable Coleman lantern that could charge as I roll on down the highway.

Some fly-by-night ‘green energy’ company with influential democrat backing will make a killing on a failed system, file for bankruptcy, the taxpayers will be left holding the bag, and the great circle of life will be complete.

Indiana once had 'plans' in the Statehouse to set the value of π to 3.000

What dumba$$ in Indy came up with that idea.

Possibly the same one who designed the median on Mount Comfort road by the airport!

No, they’ll be built just as the highway ENTERS town, thus using regenerative braking to charge up the underground stuff.
