Indiana to build highway able to charge electric vehicles while moving

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WISH) — Indiana plans to rebuild a small section of highway that by next summer could charge electric vehicles being driven.

Purdue University and Indiana government’s Department of Transportation, in separate news releases issued Wednesday, touted the construction project as the first highway segment in the nation with wireless charging. Construction could begin as soon as April 1.

Neither Purdue or the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) reported how much the project will cost.

Indianapolis-based White Construction was awarded a contract to build the wireless power-transfer technology in a quarter-mile of U.S. 231/U.S. 52 between Cumberland Avenue and Lindberg Road in West Lafayette. That’s near the Walmart Supercenter and the INDOT West Lafayette regional office.

“Will ICE vehicles explode from the electrical charge?”

Haven’t you heard? There won’t BE any ICE vehicles in a few short few years.......but since EVs are ALREADY exploding, I don’t see any reason that would change.

EMF health effect concerns? Who wants to ride close to that for hours on end?

Remember when it was a huge concern regarding electric transmission lines?

It will be expensive. They will have to dig up roads to install these massive charging coils.

Assuming that it works imagine what it would cost to install this on all interstate highways?

What dumba$$ in Indy came up with that idea.

I think these idiots have been watching too many Star-Trek movies.
They’re not smart enough to know they’re not smart enough.

build the wireless power-transfer technology in a quarter-mile of U.S. 231/U.S. 52
= = =

So at 60 mph, I am in that section for 15 seconds.

That is some powerful charging going on.

At 30MPH it takes 30 seconds to go 1/4 mile. If the wireless charger is even 1/10 as efficient as wired charging then this is equivalent to 1.5 seconds of wired charging.

Brilliant!

From another article dealing with this technology for charging busses —

“The receiver operates with a nominal airgap of just 17 cm above the coil.”

17 cm? That is 6.7 inches clearance. Seriously?

Apparently they have some things to work on to implement such a concept.

South Korea has experimented more with this idea than anywhere else, I believe. They have used electric powered buses and charging cables embeded in the roadway. The problem seen so far in their work is the cost of the idea. There are initial savings in the idea requires less battery power on board the vehicle. But that savings is far less than the much greater cost of the buried charging cable system, versus any standard traditional EV charging system.

Why not just make a giant “slot-car” track for EVs to follow?

With the power feed built right into the road, the EVs could zip along just like the little slot-cars around the track.

Of course, if the power is in any way interrupted, the EV comes to an immediate screeching halt.
