Vermont advances bill requiring fossil fuel companies pay for damage caused by climate change

The Vermont Legislature is advancing legislation requiring big fossil fuel companies pay a share of the damage caused by climate change after the state suffered catastrophic summer flooding and damage from other extreme weather.

“In order to remedy the problems created by washed out roads, downed electrical wires, damaged crops and repeated flooding, the largest fossil fuel entities that have contributed to climate change should also contribute to fixing the problem that they caused,” Sen. Nader Hashim, a Democrat from Windham County, said to Senate colleagues on Friday.

It’s a polluter-pays model affecting companies engaged in the trade or business of extracting fossil fuel or refining crude oil attributable to more than 1 billion metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions during the time period. The funds could be used by the state for such things as upgrading stormwater drainage systems; upgrading roads, bridges and railroads; relocating, elevating or retrofitting sewage treatment plants and making energy efficient weatherization upgrades to public and private buildings.

Hashim, the Democratic senator from Windham County, said the reality is that severe weather patterns are here and will happen more frequently and become more damaging over time. Adapting and becoming more resilient costs money and Vermont has few options to pay for the damage.

“We can place the burden on Vermont taxpayers or we can keep our fingers crossed that the federal government will help us or we can have fossil fuel companies pay their fair share,” he said.

“summer flooding and damage from other extreme weather”

Are the idiots saying Vermont never in its history suffered occasions of major flooding???

“The Great Vermont Flood of 1927, November 3-4. The flood of November 3-4, 1927, stands as the greatest natural disaster in Vermont history. Devastation occurred throughout the state, with 1,285 bridges lost as well as countless numbers of homes and buildings destroyed and hundreds of miles of roads and railroad tracks ...”””

And then there was the all New England Great Rainstorm and Flood of 1869.

He is a State Senator, not in Congress.

But he could use this to get elected to Congress and spend 40 years there.

The climate has been changing since the beginning of time. If not the word wouldn’t even exist.

Every article I see about this, I say the oil companies should just cut off the state. No gas, no heating oil, no natural gas. Vermont has lots of trees and they can ride bikes. Good luck….

Let them give up anything and everything made from or with fossil fuels.

Clothes, cleaning supplies, anything plastic, cars, computers, cell phones, medical supplies, etc.

Make them live what they demand. NO fossil fuels.

We’ll see how long that lasts.

The escalator petal is in the floorboard and the governors have been disabled. We are going wide open down a dead end street. There is only one this will end and the general public is too stupid to understand.

> How do they prove damage caused by climate change… <

Unfortunately, they don’t have to prove anything. All they need do is pass the bill then have a woke judge deny the oil companies’ eventual appeal.

As others have noted, maybe the oil companies should just pull out of Vermont if this bill is passed. And that’s because blackmailers never stop with just one demand.

And CONCRETE — huge amounts of fossil power go into cement kilns. People have no idea how much heat it takes to make cement.

Imagine no roads, no foundations, no bricks, no mortar — no modern buildings!

These Neanderthals should be forced to explain what life would look like without fossil fuels and how they would replace them.

They are all DESTROYERS, not builders. It’s easy to destroy. It is very hard to build. Just look at the Francis Scott Key bridge. It took a decade of planning and construction and POOF, gone in an instant.

Vermont advances bill requiring fossil fuel companies pay for damage caused by climate change, as fossil fuel companies pull out of Vermont, leaving motorists without gas & oil, trucks without diesel, & homes without heating oil.

Gas stations all closed, heating oil companies go out of business. This is truly a big environmental wacko win!

EVs everywhere, except all the nat gas and coal plants shuttered, leaving only wind and solar to power the gird. Blackouts lasting weeks or months. Most EVs stranded.

Another Big WIN!!!!!

Country is already bankrupt. Only way this ends is when the final curtain drops and these freaks suffer physical harm as a result.
As for the climate?
Feb of 22 a certain volcanic eruption happened that put up substantial gasses into the upper atmosphere. Enough to effect the climate for a decade.
We are about to enter the peak effects of that result.
Next question is..what is normal climate? The earth swings wildly from one extreme to the other. That is a fact. Another fact is this..the moderate climate we now live in is historically short.
Those are facts.
