The Democrat mayor of Atlantic City’s home was raided by armed police officers last week in what he now calls a “political” attack as police investigated a “family matter.”

Mayor Marty Small Sr. said Monday he was approached by two Atlantic City Prosecutor’s Office officers while he was helping his mother-in-law into the car so his wife could take her to get bloodwork done at around 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, Fox 29 reports.

The officers then presented him with five search warrants on Small’s home and vehicles as part of an ongoing investigation the mayor said he had been aware of for several months.

“As I turn around every area of my house, 20 law enforcement officials with guns, rifles, battering rams and more ascend to our proximity,” Small said at a news conference addressing the incident on Monday, according to CBS News.

In 2006 he was charged and acquitted of election fraud, and in 2011 he was again charged and acquitted of election fraud concerning the 2009 Atlantic City mayoral election along with five other Democrats.[5]

In 2017, Small narrowly lost to Frank Gilliam in the Democratic primary for Atlantic City mayor.[4][5]

Following the resignation of previous Atlantic City mayor Frank Gilliam, the city council voted to appoint Small as mayor.[6][2] He served for an unexpired term through December 31, 2020, pending a special election in November 2020.[6][2] In November 2020, he was re-elected for an additional one-year term and in November 2021, he won his first four-year term as mayor.

On March 28, 2024, Police executed a search warrant at his home.

Small attended Atlantic City High School, where he played basketball.[4]

Small graduated from Stockton University in New Jersey, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communications.
