Amazon Ditches 'Just Walk Out' Checkouts at Its Grocery Stores
Gizmodo via MSN ^ | 04 03 2024 | Maxwell Zeff

Posted on 04/03/2024 8:47:15 AM PDT by yesthatjallen

Amazon is phasing out its checkout-less grocery stores with “Just Walk Out” technology, first reported by The Information Tuesday. The company’s senior vice president of grocery stores says they’re moving away from Just Walk Out, which relied on cameras and sensors to track what people were leaving the store with.

Just over half of Amazon Fresh stores are equipped with Just Walk Out. The technology allows customers to skip checkout altogether by scanning a QR code when they enter the store. Though it seemed completely automated, Just Walk Out relied on more than 1,000 people in India watching and labeling videos to ensure accurate checkouts. The cashiers were simply moved off-site, and they watched you as you shopped.

On Wednesday, GeekWire reported that Amazon Web Services is cutting a few hundred jobs in its Physical Stores Technology team, according to internal emails. The layoffs will allegedly impact portions of Amazon’s identity and checkout teams.

Instead of Just Walk Out, Amazon is moving towards Dash Carts, a scanner and screen that’s embedded in your shopping cart, allowing you to checkout as you shop. These offer a more reliable solution than Just Walk Out. Amazon Fresh stores will also feature self check out counters from now on, for people who aren’t Amazon members.

I think it was last year that Zabka (polish for ‘frog’) convenience stores exceeded Amazon in the number of cashierless stores and they didn’t need 1000 employees in india to do it.

I use the ‘scan n’go’ feature at Sam’s. I scan each item as I put it into the cart. No waiting on line for checkout. Really saves time

Still show the QR code on my phone to the attendant on the way out.

When I visited Poland, I probably hit about 20 Zabkas when I was there, but I didn’t see any cashierless stores.

They hire a bunch of India crooks to watch every move you make.

No thanks, I would just walk out for good.

Sounds like a great idea! With the best of intentions! What could possibly go wrong.

Too many are just walking out.

Obviously the way to stop that would be as simple as an RFID computer chip in your wrist that contained your banking info. Then you could require someone to walk through an airport security style door that reads the chips in the items you bought and auto deducts it from your bank account. Just think how helpful that would be, because you could have your medical history put on the chip, too. That way, if you're ever in a car accident and rendered unconscious, the first responders would have access to that info as well as allergies, etc. It's progress. Are you afraid of progress?

I’ve only seen the cashiered ones also. From what i’ve read the Nanos tend to be in office buildings or healthclubs or other tighter controlled environments.

Yep, possibly so. Or a bar code / QR code on the back of the right hand or the forehead that is tied to your bank account / credit card / debit card / PayPal / Venmo.

[India]

(From about 2011-2012)

An oldie but a goodie - India scans fingerprints and retinas for welfare payment system:

I had my fingerprints scanned with a similar device just a few years ago; the job required a basic security clearance.
