Indeed. At the same time, it has to be said that RSA’s trajectory, while similar, has been less catastrophic than Rhodesia’s. At the 30 year mark, Rhodesia’s transition to black rule saw hyperinflation and famine. The rand, while worth 20% of where it was, in dollars, when de Klerk put up the white flag, is still more or less a hard currency.
Granted, my factual knowledge is a month or so old; however,AFAIK, the Rand is now worth $21.00 Rand to $1.00 UDS.
I believe that that is MORE than 20% less, than what it was worth 30 years ago.
