When 61 law enforcement trainees graduated last month from Fairfax County’s Criminal Justice Training Academy, including county police officers and some from smaller departments in Fairfax, each received a certificate signed by the academy’s director, county police Maj. Wilson Lee, who is Chinese American.
Lee, whose given name is Lee Wai-Shun, signed the certificates in Chinese, as he typically does. Among those who received certificates March 7 were three new officers from the Herndon town police force — the first trainees from that department to attend the academy since Lee took command more than a year ago. When Herndon Police Chief Maggie DeBoard noticed the Chinese signature shortly before the graduation ceremony, she was not pleased.
“This is not acceptable for my agency,” she told Lee in an email. “I don’t want our Herndon officers to receive these.”
Not only did Fairfax County refuse to issue new certificates as DeBoard requested, but a top Fairfax official also has notified DeBoard that Herndon police trainees will no longer be welcome at the academy.

Why the heck.would somebody sign a training certificate with some bizarre glyphs?
LOL! Have you ever seen a doctor’s signature?
Thass right!
This is America! We speak, read and write English!
Major Lee must be forced to sign graduate certificates in Cursive English!
Well, doesn't that mean that they are not a minority anymore?
If an “X” can be a legal signature, anything can be a legal signature.
“Why the heck.would somebody sign a training certificate with some bizarre glyphs?”
Agree, what exactly does an image of an “Ox Cart”, “House”, and a “Pentium” have to do with a signature?
It’s not “your” agency and they’re not “your” officers.
A signature is, and always has been, whatever the signee says it is.
That’s Racist!
Damn right.
How much do you bet this person would be fired if they signed in Hebrew?
ENGLISH. The school should lose its accredidation if it cannot be respectful of being in the US. Maybe the Chinese spy instructor should be deported back to China.
Just getting those Amelican pigs used to what is coming..
He’s not a doctor, but a family friend signs his name like a comma.
“should be deported back to China”
If he signed it in Cherokee should he be deported to Oklahoma?
On the credit card kiosks, my signature is usually just a line. Or a dot. Or just a squiggle.
However, when I sign certificates, which I do on occasion, I make it as clear as possible. It’s a formal document, not a political statement.
The police chief is correct.
I press my keys into the kiosk screen, kind if like Cuneiform. Ruins it after, but it’s my right.
The legal question for Fairfax county is does it or does not have a legal language for its official dealings. For instance, can you submit a request to Fairfax county in Chinese, forcing Fairfax county to get a translation to process it? If the answer is no, then there is no legal basis in the county for Mr Lee signing any document with a Chinese language signiture.
Why didn’t he sign it in Pinyin...?
Wouldn’t that depend on how many languages are recognized there for voter guides?
