Exclusive: State Department officials told House investigators they created Afghanistan withdrawal plans from scratch

Hours of closed-door testimony from three top State Department officials shed new light on the “unprecedented” situation in the final days of the US presence in Afghanistan as the officials were rushed to the country with virtually no time to prepare and no established emergency evacuation plan in place when they arrived.

The three officials, John Bass, Jim DeHart and Jayne Howell, were all plucked from unrelated assignments and rushed into Afghanistan in the hours after Kabul fell to the Taliban due to their extensive experience in Afghanistan.

The transcripts of their interviews with the House Foreign Affairs Committee, obtained exclusively by CNN, are the latest tranche of more than a dozen interviews conducted by the committee as a key part of Republican Chairman Michael McCaul’s ongoing investigation into the 2021 evacuation that involved the deaths of 13 US service members.

McCaul is planning to put out a report later this year that includes overall takeaways from the interviews, as well as State Department notes the House Foreign Affairs Committee has received from the agency’s own review of the withdrawal.

Biden administration officials expect that the report will be timed with a political motive: to bring the Afghanistan withdrawal back to the fore during the heat of the presidential election.

I have never been to Af-Pak, and never served in the military. But I can look at a topographic map.

When the US gave up Bagram Airbase, it was locked into defending the tiny, densely populated geographic basin surrounded by mountains called “Kabul.”

Like the French at Dien Bien Phu - “seize the low ground!”

but I’m not a tranny, BIPOC, or a experienced Fed.gov Neo-Marxist, so I am unqualified to offer opinions to the US State Department or Pentagon.

"John Bass, Jim DeHart and Jayne Howell"

Three more names to add to the list of Traitorjoe and his kakistocrats who will need to be indicted, tried, and convicted for giving aid and comfort to the enemies of the United States.

We needed 20k troops plus a lot of planes and drones for the evacuation. Needed Bagram Airbase.

When the Soviets withdrew from Afghanistan, they did that by leaving in force.

Our recruiting is down because our leadership is $#it.

We did great in the Gulf War. We learned from our mistakes in Vietnam. Then we forgot all the lessons we’ve learned. And we’ve screwed up since then.

The Biden administration is a cluster. They have screwed up everything they have touched. Now Joe will run on fixing all those things and will blame it all on Trump.

The three officials...were all plucked from unrelated assignments and rushed into Afghanistan in the hours after Kabul fell to the Taliban...

Let me refresh the author's memory - there most certainly was a detailed withdrawal plan in play at the time. Kabul fell to the Taliban after the Biden administration had announced that the negotiated agreement was null and void. And the reason they did that was solely to prevent Trump from getting his deserved credit for it and to allow Biden to grandly announce his own agreement on the 20th anniversary of 9/11. They were arrogant enough to assume that the Taliban would just sit down and obey.

So the Taliban had a new American President, a country that was already accepting a power sharing arrangement, and an opposition military that knew perfectly well that it would be sharing power (at best) with the new Taliban government. Anyone who was surprised that the old government's army didn't fight under those conditions is a little naive. We had an American military establishment who went along with this farce and surrendered the principal airbase from which the planned evacuation was to take place, leading to that chaotic mob scene in Kabul. What we had was political wonks in all cases so far out of their lanes that disaster was inevitable.

The Taliban probably respected Trump. I assume.

Joe Biden came in. They saw that he was weak. So it didn't matter which agreement they agreed on.

So basically, Joe Biden is Jimmy Carter on steroids.

Like every part of Biden’s policies, including all the “green” agenda stuff and the border - there really are no real plans, just policy dictates.

A stunning admission of arrogance, incompetency and action devoid of any experienced input. IOW, The State Department knows it all - even when they don’t.

What’s with the “we” crap, kemo sabe?

Biden and Austin own this completely. They let the State dept plan a withdrawal? The mil has contingency plans for EVERYTHING. And it doesn’t usually say “cut and run” on the front page.

the reason for the withdraw was because Bidens handlers knew they could not send proper support to Zee penis boy if they also had to support a war in Afghanistan.

So, I thought it was up to military leaders to determine when to advance, and when to withdraw.
