In the Vietnam war we started by trying to pull the French colonial chestnuts out of the fire, and got our fingers burned. I think JFK was trying to slow the process down and get out of that mess. Texas big money interests had him killed so they could control LBJ and get those lucrative military construction contracts for building ports and other facilities in Vietnam.
In the Ukraine situation we are trying to prevent a colonial invasion by Russia into territory Putin had already agreed to protect from such invasions in exchange for getting possession of all the nukes remaining in Ukraine. How can one do any negotiating with someone who backs out of and runs over any deal they make, especially the big ones?
