Road Trip: Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow, California

CAbarstow1

Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow is a United States Marine Corps supply and maintenance installation located in the Mojave Desert east of Barstow, in San Bernardino County, Southern California.

Its mission is to rebuild and repair ground-combat and combat-support equipment and to support installations on the West Coast of the United States. Today, one of MCLB Barstow’s most important facilities is the Marine Corps Logistics Bases’ Maintenance Center. The only other facility of this kind is located at MCLB Barstow’s sister installation, Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany.

The Yermo Annex, (Yermo Marine Corps Supply Center) in the town of Yermo, encompasses 1,859 acres and is primarily a storage and industrial complex for the Marine Corps.

The Marines for the Mounted Color Guard are selected for the billet of stablemen due to exuberating the Corps values and ability to present the national ensign in an appropriate manner. Marines come to the stables with little to no experience with ranch operations or horsemanship. However, after many hours working with the civilian horse trainer they develop the ability to ride and maintain a horse as well as operate a ranch effectively.

The horses in the unit are wild mustangs adopted from the Bureau of Land Management's Adopt a Horse and Burro Program. Initially the stablemen would find wild horses on their own and train them. However, the Bodfish chapter of the 1st Marine Division Association helped with initiating the process of adopting the horses through the Bureau of Land Management which eventually became the official process of acquiring horses. Once adopted, the horses are trained to a standard of performance by the horse trainer and an experienced stablemen.

Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow offers the only Intermediate-advance rail operations class within the Department of Defense. As the Center for Excellence for Rail Operations training within the Marine Corps, our course is designed to provide our students in relating occupational fields with the necessary knowledge, confidence and experience in conducting rail operations for military movements.

The main course offered is the Railhead Operations Group Training Course offered at MCLB Barstow, CA. This course runs approximately two weeks and comprised of classroom and field instruction, as well as support for a real world mission. Each class is designed to place each student in every facet of rail operations, from planning to execution to completion, each student will be trained in their own MOS tasks, as well as the tasks of supporting MOS’s.

Great Road Trip, Lauren. 🚗🚙 Hope you’re having a good week.

I’m sitting outside, because it’s a picture-perfect twilight here. After all the wind we’ve had, this is so peaceful.

Howdy, lauren.

I probably missed you, getting here so late. :-( Been one of those days.

I hope all’s going well. Did you get to step out to enjoy the eclipse today? You were in the path.

Hey there, radu!

I DID!!! Hard to believe, huh. Grey hung out with me, but she was meowing like crazy, because I wasn’t feeding her RIGHT NOW!

Was it nice enough to be outside there?

LOL! You can feed a cat and it will beg like it’s starving to death a couple of minutes later. Silly critters.

It was cooler than yesterday but still nice out. I went out to watch what we got of the eclipse. It was cloudy but we got a large opening for several minutes at just the right time. We got about 90% coverage here.

We got an inch and a half of rain while I slept and there were little puddles across the back yard. It’s going to be a sloppy mess here by the time this week’s rain is finished. The ground is already saturated .

We got 90%, too. We were shown this little trick with a colander and tried it. It was very cool!
