Trump says Arizona’s abortion ban goes too far while defending the overturning of Roe v. Wade

ATLANTA (AP) — Donald Trump said Wednesday that an Arizona law that criminalizes nearly all abortions goes too far and called on Arizona lawmakers to change it, while also defending the overturning of Roe v. Wade that cleared states to ban the procedure.

“It’ll be straightened out and as you know, it’s all about states’ rights,” the former president told supporters and journalists after landing in Atlanta for a fundraiser. “It’ll be straightened out, and I’m sure that the governor and everybody else are going to bring it back into reason and that’ll be taken care of, I think, very quickly.”

Though Trump has waffled on whether he supports abortion rights, he appointed three of the Supreme Court justices who overturned Roe v. Wade and ended a federally guaranteed right to abortion. Now facing growing political backlash as Democrats notch victories around the nation by campaigning on abortion rights, Trump increasingly has been put on the defensive and urged Republicans to avoid supporting bans that are unpopular with many Americans.

Trump issued a video statement this week declining to endorse a national abortion ban and saying he believes limits should be left to the states. His statement angered some religious conservatives and energized allies of President Joe Biden who see abortion rights as one of Trump’s weaknesses.

Trump should say it’s no longer his issue. He’s been only in federal office both in the past and in the future (running for president again). Ask him about federal issues not state issues.

Exactly.

Trump called Florida’s 6-week abortion limit “harsh”.

He is trying to play both sides with “restrictions are too harsh” and “but those decisions are made by the states now”

Before the press was covering up everything for Biden.

... Today he’s out condemning Trump about abortion.... let’s see!

“But his past opposition to most federal funding for abortion services is more striking than previously recognized, according to an NBC News review of his Senate voting record, and includes repeated examples of Biden rejecting exceptions for victims of rape and incest”

Biden voted against a 1977 compromise that allowed Medicaid to fund abortions that included exceptions for victims of rape and incest in addition to concerns for the life of the mother. While the rape and incest exceptions passed in that case, Biden voted in 1981 to again remove them, in what was the most far-reaching ban on federal funds ever enacted by Congress.
Biden also voted several times, including in 1983, to prohibit federal workers from using health insurance on abortion services, with only exception being to save life of the mother.

I like Trump, but he does not need to comment on this. It is unnecessary and carries risks.

Trump should say it’s no longer his issue.

According to the 4th paragraph of this AP article, this is what Trump has done - said its a State issue.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg said Roe vs. Wade was wrongly decided. She was not pro-life.

1. He says it's a state's issue. 2. He also only criticizes states where abortion restrictions are "too strict," but none that are "too lenient."

So, Laissez Faire when abortion is without restriction, but why does he have to criticize states, that don't do what he wants?

If it's no longer his issue, why does he bash states that restrict abortion? First of all, if it's up to the states, why does he need to comment about it at all? Second, why are only states that restrict abortion, "too extreme?" So far, he hasn't criticized any state for being too lax.

So, it's a state's rights issue if a state chooses to have unrestricted abortion. But if a state chooses to restrict it too much, everyone else needs to get involved?

If so, then why is he telling Arizona, Florida, etc. that they are doing wrong?

Why do pro-choice states have "state's rights," but pro-life states don't have them?

Trump would be well advised to talk no further on the issue of abortion.

If it’s a state issue, aren’t Arizona and Florida states? Why don’t they get the same rights?

> Ask him about federal issues not state issues.

Slavery was a "state issue" too.

Abortion means allowing a woman to claim her unborn child is her personal property to do with as she pleases.

The Constitution guarantees one cannot forfeit their life without due process.

Trump is toast unless he leans INTO BANNING ABORTION AT THE FEDERAL LEVEL, he must show the same clarity, boldness, and moral clarity he did in 2016 when he campaigned on overturning Roe in the courts.

Trump should aggressively attack abortion as anti-minority by correctly stating minority babies are disproportionately slaughtered, and explain that Planned Parenthood was created to reduce the minority population in our country.

Trump cannot say it is not an issue, that won't work. He can't dismiss it as a state issue, that won't work. It is an issue, which is why it is in the news.

Trump sort of said abortion is a personal matter in his recent statement.

Trump said it is a state issue. Fine.

But the feds still has a role, abortions happen at federal facilities, as one example. Feds may say it needs to be included in insurance as well, etc.

Trump's statement didn't end the matter.

Did Trump say abortion is okay, he now defends it state-by-state? Seems like he is moving there. He criticized Florida and Iowa's abortion restrictions. Now he criticizes Arizona.

So, does and will Trump say "I support and defend abortion."

No, they’ll make him look uncaring. To me he is doing it right. I would be more of a demagogue here. Call on the Govenor to call a special session to solve the problem with the legislature. Don’t propose any solutions but keep bringing up the fact that Govenor needs to get on with it. When she refuses point out that she’s also refusing to fix the border and she’s all talk no action. Another nice point will be to say this is exactly why this needs to be handled at the state level. No the Govenor doesn’t have to wait 20 years for a solution from Washington. Can’t allow the Rats to sit on this until September only to use it for GOTV efforts.
