OUTHAVEN, Miss. - A now-former Southaven police officer is being accused of working with criminals to steal an Infiniti late last year in DeSoto County.
Tony Herring Jr. is charged with felony vehicle theft and conspiracy to commit vehicle theft, DeSoto County District Attorney Matthew Barton confirmed Wednesday afternoon. However, Barton says that prosecutors believe Herring could be connected to more thefts.

Herring was arrested in Horn Lake, Mississippi, on Wednesday after an indictment out of DeSoto County. Barton’s newly-formed Public Corruption Unit brought the charges, bearing fruit quicker than expected.
DA Barton says Herring’s indictment includes another person he allegedly worked with; that person’s identity has not been revealed.
Barton says the crimes took place while Herring was still employed by the department in late 2023.
“Not only does it betray the public trust in the position he had, but these car thefts are turning into situations where criminals are accessing guns to do more violent crimes,” said Barton.
Herring was fired not long after the 2023 theft, according to the DA.

The DA says Herring would serve as a lookout for thieves and provide information to them to help steal cars.
“While he was still employed, he was facilitating the theft of vehicles in our community and helping criminals who were coming here to break the law, some of which were hiding in Memphis after they were stealing cars,” Barton said at a press conference Wednesday evening. “Southaven Police were able to discover this scheme. They very quickly and appropriately terminated employment for this individual.”
