Well, Caitlin did play with the boys, and was MVP of the coed league… in fourth grade IIRC. Best player on Iowa men’s team played against her in it. But once the boys hit puberty they could beat her so she switched to girl only teams.

Her Iowa predecessor as female national player of the year, Megan Gustafson, kept up longer. Her town was so small they couldn’t get five 8th grade girls to have a girls team. So Megan played on boys team. And opposing boys coaches accused her of being too physical against their boys! In HS they collectively had enough girls for a team so she switched then.
