California Employees Arrive At Restaurant Only To Discover Closure Due To Newsom’s $20 Minimum Wage
State of the Union ^ | 4/21 | Evelyn Thomas

In California, a Foster’s Freeze location closed and laid off its workers due to a new $20 per hour minimum wage that took effect April 1st.

The wage increase was mandated by Governor Gavin Newsom under a law raising the fast food minimum wage by 25% to $20 an hour.

The assistant manager said the owner could no longer afford the higher salaries.

Some employees initially thought it was an April Fool’s joke. Prior reports indicated many California restaurants had already begun layoffs anticipating the wage hike.

While economists debate the impacts of minimum wage increases, the restaurant industry is often hardest hit due to tight profit margins.

California currently has the highest unemployment rate in the US at 5.3% as of February, indicating the minimum wage law has led to job losses.

Old news, three weeks ago. And the owner seemed to simply not care about her employees, treated them without any respect.

Elsewhere: San Francisco bill would prohibit grocery stores from closing.

Just pass a law they have to pay $20 an hour and the restaurants and fast food joints are not allowed to close shop.

Socialism makes it easy.

Closed up shop.

Young Guy Employee: Gosh I hope I’m going to get to my mom’s house in time for supper. She makes pot roast or a friend chicken meal. And her cakes and pies from scratch are to die for. Probably has fresh bed sheets and pillow cases ready. I’m goin’ home. Three hot meals. Sleep in. Play video games. Watch some streaming movies. More video games. Turn in.

The employees probably voted for it and supported it until they were laid off. I have no sympathy for them either.

Well if two of their stores close, they won’t affected by the minimum wage law.

The more the government tries to manipulate the market place, poverty worsens. Capitalism is the antithesis of an activist government.

First step towards Directive 10-289. Now CA is talking about forbidding companies from closing.

I don't see John Galt anywhere.

Just throw a couple loaves of bread, in the oven and you’re exempt from the law, right?🤔

Most employers will only need one employee, per shift, to oprate the robots.

I am opposed to minimum wage laws. But as a point of information, it is worth noting that the minimum wage in 1975 was - if I remember correctly- $3.50. That is equivalent to a little over $20 today.
