“Part of how I think we’re going to turn the corner on the unacceptable level of roadway deaths that we just lived with for my entire lifetime is through these kinds of technologies,” said Buttigieg, who is 42.

But Buttigieg said it will save 362 lives per year ...

This, in a nation that has had 40,000+ motor vehicle fatalities in each of the last three years.

You're seeing what happens in a nation that is run by retarded people.

I occasionally have used Cruise Control (speed control), but, maybe on 20 different days over several decades.

But a car that imagines it knows when to brake, no thanks.

TESLA’s self-driving? No thanks.

This shouldn't be a government mandate. The free market can handle it just fine.

That said, AEB is one of the great advances in automotive safety, on the same scale as seat belts and then airbags. It turns fatal accidents into serious ones, serious ones into minor ones, and minor ones into near-misses. I would strongly suggest everyone look into it. (I spent my career as a quality engineer in the automotive safety area.)

I’m 80. I know enough to pump the brakes. When my kids were learning to drive, I took them to an icy, empty, parking lot and showed them the difference between pumping the brakes and slamming the brakes. They never forgot.

Oh my … I didn’t need it, but thanks for yet another reason to keep my car and my old Tacoma forever. They both are reliable, run great and look good, too! Oh, what a feeling!

Simple fix:
Require all cars to be fitted with speed limit governors set to 15 miles an hour, add 5-point aircraft style seat belts/restraints, and supply 50 mile an hour steel bumpers on all sides of the car, Further, require all existing cars be RETROFITTED up to the current safety codes within one year.
PRESTO! Near-zero fatalities on the road!

(Of COURSE, you could never actually DO this!!)

I’m 80. I know enough to pump the brakes.

Pumping the brakes is actually the wrong method for anti-lock brakes. It's good for non-anti-lock braking systems. But it can actually prevent the anti-locks from working properly and cause a longer stopping distance.

“and set performance standards“

People are not focusing on this part. This is where the really insidious part is. Auto brakes are already in cars the second part is the speed controls europe is mandating.

I’m looking for rear bumper enhancements.

Like a Brazilian Butt Enhancement for a car.

That’s correct, but this isn’t about antilock brakes.

This is about a computer “deciding” to apply the brakes regardless of what the driver wants to do.

Soon, only the wealthy elite will own cars.

The rest of us peasants will have to walk or ride bicycles.

So if I speed up a bit to pass someone and that person happens to slow down a bit as I do so, and the cars get a little to close for comfort when I’m about 90% over, the car will slam on the breaks and get me rear-ended from the person I’m now in front of.

Great!
