The Ministry of Transport is planning to impose a new security levy on inland flights, as well as a levy on international flights. The levy on inland flights will be significantly lower, at $2.5 per passenger, compared with the $10-15 fee for passengers on international flights.
All the levies will apparently go into effect before October, and are intended to cover the new expenses incurred by the application of measures based on the lessons drawn from the terrorist attacks on the planes in the US. Although flight security regulations in Israel are better than in the rest of the world, some changes will have to be made in Israel as well.
The changes will include the installation of new equipment, new procedures, and improved control over the entire system. Revenue from the new levies will go mostly to the State, which is the principal investor and underwriter of the measures. Only some of the revenue will go to the airlines. Improvements will be made in technological equipment in airports in Israel and in the terminals of Israeli airlines abroad.
The Ministry of Transport will not allow Israel-bound planes to take off from airports not meeting all the new flight safety requirements.
In the past few days, the Ministry of Transport was approached by several airlines and international aviation bodies that expressed an interest in flight safety training in Israel.
