"One Reporter's Opinion"

It is this reporter's opinion that whenever we face life threatening, actually civilization threatening, circumstances, we turn to the flag and the Bible - patriotism and faith go hand in hand. And yet almost immediately there's a reaction from the American Civil Liberties Union. Judging from their present behavior, one must conclude it is not the American Civil Liberties Union; it is the Anti-Christ Lawsuit Union. But then they're true to form.

They were founded in 1920 by Roger Baldwin, a communist sympathizer. His board of directors were card-carrying communists - people like Max Eastman, William Foster, Helen Gurley Flynn. Baldwin wrote, "I am for socialism, disarmament and ultimately for abolishing the state itself as an instrument of violence and compulsion. I seek social ownership of property, abolition of the propertied class and sole control by those who produce wealth." He concluded, "Communism is the goal."

Years ago I witnessed an interesting turn of events in our California state legislature. The California Senate Fact-Finding Committee on Un-American Activities stated flat out, "The ACLU may be definitely classified as a communist front or transmission belt organization." According to a special House investigative committee, at least 90% of its efforts are on behalf of communists who come in conflict with the law. This is the same group - the ACLU - that is so opposed to prayer in the schools, preventing the singing of "Silent Night," or posting of the Ten Commandments, purging the words "In God We Trust," removing most traditional Judeo-Christian values from our nation's schools and public life, the legalization of child pornography, and the legalization of drugs. This Anti-Christ Lawsuit Union violently opposes the moral and religious foundations of our republic.

An example of the hypocrisy of the ACLU came forth when my friend Chuck Morgan resigned from that body. He told me the Civil Liberties Union attempted to throttle him in his public statements, and thus became guilty of the very thing with which they charge others. Morgan said, "What about MY freedom of speech?" He said, "They left their so-called nonpartisan strength behind and abandoned it when the ACLU took out a full-page ad calling for the impeachment of Richard Nixon." Morgan said, "The ACLU picks and chooses its representation, not for value or service, but for exploitation of the organization."

This reporter has sent dozens of individuals to the ACLU. Never has that body assisted a single one! How selective! No wonder we now witness the ACLU with an all-out attack on the flag and the Bible!

There was a time when a segment of our population looked upon the ACLU as a singular organization - in many ways an irreplaceable one. Now, one must conclude it is just another political pressure group. No longer can it be identified as a nonpartisan protector of constitutional liberty. As the LA Times put it in a 1974 editorial, "The ACLU's destination appears to be unknown."
