(CNSNews.com) - A charity fund established to help victims of the Sept. 11th attacks made a grant of $171,000 to a group defending eight individuals being held in connection with the terrorist attacks on New York and Washington, D.C.
The grant from the September 11th Fund, which is affiliated with the United Way, was given to the Legal Aid Society, a group that is aiding in the legal defense of eight suspects detained in Brooklyn, N.Y. as a result of the government's investigation into the terrorist attacks.
"Instead of helping out the victims, they're actually helping out potentially suspected terrorists," said Dan Rene of the legal watchdog group National Legal and Policy Center (NLPC).
"With all the questions about the fund-raising on behalf of victims, this is a very shocking development," said Rene. "I think a lot of people will be very outraged."
One official with the September 11th Fund refused to comment, and other officials did not respond to repeated inquiries. Representatives from the Legal Aid Society were also unavailable for comment.
In its Oct. 3rd announcement, the September 11 Fund stated the grant to the Legal Aid Society will be used to "provide immediate direct legal services to the thousands of lower-income individuals working in or near the World Trade Center (including cleaning staff, waiters, messengers, vendors, etc.) who were directly affected by the terrorist attack."
According to Rene, the September 11th fund announced on October 3 the $171,000 grant to the Legal Aid Society was ostensibly to "provide emergency civil legal assistance to low-income attack victims."
Ken Boehm and Peter Flaherty of the NLPC wrote in a letter today to the September 11th Fund, "At a time when the public is questioning why so few of the victims have received aid they desperately need from groups that have raised hundreds of millions of dollars, it is disturbing that the Legal Aid Society rushed to provide free civil help to the detainees."
The letter continued, "We believe the public will be outraged, and justifiably so, to learn that funds from the September 11th Fund are going to support a group which is apparently providing civil legal help to those jailed on violations of immigration law in the wake of September 11 terrorist attacks."
The government has not released the identity of the eight men being detained on immigration violations. The men are in solitary confinement in the Special Housing Unit of the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn.
The United Way and Hollywood celebrities have come under fire in recent days because of questions regarding the financial distribution of the September 11th Fund. Actress Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell, who participated in fund-raising efforts, have previously called for a greater accounting of where the money has gone.

The United Way hasn't been able to find most of the victims families to give them financial support ...
Yet somehow the United Way has managed to find the Terrorists legal defense fund and give THEM money.
The United Way needs a major freep. They need to go out of business TODAY. Every single executive on the board of the United Way needs to get their sorry asses FREEPED in a big way.
What we need:
Names, Addresses & Phone Numbers of United Way boards of directors. Publish 'em and let the freeping begin! We need to do this for the victims families.
We need to contact the HR departments of the companies we work for and get them this article. Let our HR departments know that the United Way (which uses extortionist tactics to "solicit" our donations) supports Terrorists and is Anti-American in doing so.
Inform our fellow workers at the companies we work that if they are contributing to the United Way they need to STOP their "contributions." Let them know in no uncertain terms that they're helping fund the very terrorist organizations that seek to destroy America.
The United Way lives and dies by Corporate Donations, and "forced" employee contributions through major American companies. Cut off their funding (gee, just like President Bush is doing to these terrorist organizations!) and they'll die.
You Freepers know what to do ... Let's Roll!!!!

O'Reilly already has this. It was on a commercial for "The Factor" this morning. This story broke yesterday evening but it didn't seem like there was enough time to verify the facts and air it in time on last night's show. I'm glad he waited till today, it should be a good one.

I was trying to find out more about this story, and found this on the newsgroups. No flames please, I'm not pushing an agenda, particularly not pro-United Way, I just thought I'd post it to be fair. If this is the same Legal Aid Society this says they also had problems from 9/11:

In Manhattan, too, the main advocacy groups and agencies that serve the poor are scrambling. Overwhelmed in the best of times, they have struggled to make do without the files, telephones and office space they left behind in Lower Manhattan, where most have their headquarters.
The Legal Aid Society, to which many poor people turn for help if they run into trouble with public aid bureaucracies, has lost access even to the names and case files of many of its clients. Its main offices, at 90 Church Street, have been off limits as part of a crime scene since Sept. 11, when debris from the collapsing towers rained down on the building.
"There are pieces of the plane and body parts that they found on the roof," said Pat Bath, a spokeswoman for Legal Aid. Though the lawyers have been sent to other offices, many to 166 Montague Street in Brooklyn, few clients know how to reach them.

Why does this make it fair? I don't get it. Their current situation means nothing in the wake of UW money being funneled to the defense of people suspected to be part of the terrorist plot.
