The strongest possible exception is taken to your suggestion that gun owners are as stupid or as inconsiderate as smokers. No gun owner would EVER use his weapon in a crowded area and expect others to ingnore the noise, smoke, and projectiles, and, in effect, require then to take evasive action and simply leave the area when he chose to fire.
The arrogant believe by smokers that the innocent around them ought to enjoy the smoker's addiction is outrageous. If you want to smoke, fine, it is a free country. Just do it in a place where you don't force me to participate, then the country becomes free for you and a prison for me. I know that smokers are too stupid to recognize this fact but that is the way it is. No gun owner would EVER be as stupid as a smoker.

Not at all what I was implying. What I was saying was along the lines of the stupid quote at the bottom of the article.. the one about garlic cooking. All they need to know is that you have a gun.. and if they don't like it, you get reported to BATF.
I own a gun myself. So I was posting this as a heads up to those who also own guns. If they're trying legislation like this against smoking They'll try it against guns. (Like smoking is really an issue at all.. gimme a break. Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Just don't complain if that pursuit makes you ill.)

Probably. In NY state, you can't change your own tire on DOT operated roadways. That's taking business away from the state... So that probably is the idea they have.
To: Darksheare
Gee, next will be BBQ's, and then fireplace smoke, exhaust from vehicle. I hope they get those buses fined that spew exhaust all over when they are at a stoplight or sign.
To: Prowler Fowler
They're already trying to fine the diesels. Even though they really do burn cleaner than any gas engined beast. Would love to see the riot that would happen should they try it, though.

Not even going to concede the point, I see. Can't admit that you jumped the gun, so to speak? Very well, take this compass and this magnet and go navigate through those trees over there. Stop when you find the wise man.

Probably. In NY state, you can't change your own tire on DOT operated roadways. What is the reasoning behind this absurdity? Why do New Yorkers let themselves be subjected to this kind of asininity? I guess I just have to look at who they elected to the Senate for my answer. BTW, if I use a DOT rest stop, can I hold my own peepee, or do they need to do that for me too?

I live in New York and I have never heard of this, neither has my husband. If you get a flat on a bridge or in a tunnel, they will send someone to either fix it or tow you off/out, but it is a free service. It is designed to keep the traffic moving and as a safety measure.

It was put into effect by then governor Cuomo. It was his re-interpretation of those signs that read "Road service by permit only". That now means that if you get a flat tire, and you change it yourself, you get fined. Here in the NY, NJ, PA corner this law gets rather annoying. Yes, it is asinine. The first day it was in effect, troop F of the NY state police had a hey-day going after anyone on any DOT operated road. (This includes now Route 84).
Several people I know have been nailed with this stupidity. Furthermore,, if you break down, you have to be towed by the guy they send. And they tow you to their service station, not to where you ask to go. Oh, and they have reserved the right to ask cash payment only as a side note. I'm not surprised that you haven't heard about it before, diefree. It got bowled through with backing by Sheldon Silver and his crime syndicate (You can call them a crime syndicate now without reprisal.. right?) Cuomo had decided that it wasn't fair for people to change their own tires when they had a flat or have someone come and get a new tire for them. He decided that this was taking business away from the state. (I never understood Emperor Cuomo.. I long ago decided that his mental condition was induced by too many quaaludes and cheap burbon.) Anywhoos.. nowadays they rarely enforce that stupidity unless it's quota time or they really feel a need to be jerks.

Re: Your #3: You're just ate up with it, ain't ya? What would you possibly have done to survive, you poor, sweet little delicate thing, 30 years ago when darned near EVERYONE smoked?

My understanding of the "road service by permit" regulation is that when a motorist breaks down and calls AAA for help, only a designated garage may respond to the breakdown. If they are not AAA then AAA will reimburse the member for the cost of the tow. This was designed to prevent multiple trucks from responding to breakdowns and causing havoc.
Tow trucks used to patrol highways looking for business and causing problems.
DOT has HELP trucks patroling some roads to assist motorists and the service is free.
I have never heard of anyone getting a ticket for changing their own flat. Please enlighten me further, I find this to be very interesting.

DOT has HELP trucks patroling some roads to assist motorists and the service is free. Free?!!! You must mean that there are no out of pocket expenses at the time service is rendered. I'm sure your taxes are way more than mine!!! We have no income tax or sales tax, so I get to change my own tire.
To: AlaskaErik
yes, free isn't free. I guess we could put free in quotation marks whenever the govt. is involved. The HELP trucks are to keep traffic moving, one disabled car ties up traffic for miles.

So, all smokers are stupid, huh? And I guess you believe all blacks are lazy and Hispanics have velvet paintings hanging in their living rooms and all Asians drive slow and all democrats are evil. Wait! I'll concede that last one.

Like I said. It was a brainchild of then Emperor Cuomo. In the Port Jervis area (Ruled by the Troop F state troopers.) They are sometimes rather quick to pull that stupidity up and use it. It doesn't surprise me at all that you haven't heard of it.
Just don't break down on the Thruway near Newburgh, or on Rte 84 anywhere within Orange county. Oh, and don't get caught having someone bring you anything, they'll ticket them as well. I wish I had the exact date and law number to quote, but I don't. I just have firsthand knowledge of people who got nailed by it.
I seem to remember that Emperor Cuomo signed it during the last two years of his rule over New York. I also remember that he had Shelly Silver's backing on it. (I personally haven't had the displeasure of dealing with Troop F, the most unprofessional state trooper section in the whole of the country, with this law.) Hopefully the reason that you haven't heard of it is because they aren't using it, or have finally dropped it. (One can hope!) And DOT near my area will charge you for the privelage of their attention.... (Bill in the mail.)
