Open Letter to Kathleen Soliah and the other former members of the SLA Gang

You can pretend all you want. You can deceive who you will. But, I know what you did, and I know who you really are. You killed Myrna Opsahl and you have never expressed any remorse. You're not a model citizen as you profess. You are a cold-blooded killer.

You helped plan the bank robbery. You agreed to use loaded guns. You were there when Myrna Opsahl was shot. You saw her fall to the floor. You heard her moan in agony. You watched her writhe in pain. You chose to let her die in a pool of blood. Afterward, you sympathized with the shooter, Emily Harris, and you accepted your comrade's callous statement: "Her death doesn't matter! She was a bourgeois pig, a doctor's wife, an expendable member of an expendable class!"

Your brother, Steve Soliah, was acquitted on perjured testimony. But, Patricia Hearst, Michael Bortin, and Wendy Yoshimura all confessed to the crime and confirmed that you were one of the robbers in the bank. Now you've been caught and charged with the attempted murder of police officers. Do you actually expect that your acting skills and high priced lawyers will get you off? How can you ask the very people you have deceived to pay for your defense when you know you are guilty?

You can try to hide your shame and your guilt with a new name. You can hope that your family and your friends don't care about your dreadful past any more than you do. You can even marry a doctor, raise a family, and volunteer in your community, but you will never earn the status of a model citizen, because 25 years ago you helped murder a true one.

Stop trying to flee from justice. Your attempt at appearing innocent while protecting your co-conspirators is failing. It's obvious where your loyalties still lie. It's obvious that you have not reformed. You need to accept the facts: Myrna Opsahl's death does matter. She was not expendable. She was a loving wife and mother. She had the right to live, and society has the right to demand justice.

Jon Opsahl
