Given subsequent events, has any thought been given to the possibility that the co-pilot was supposed to actually crash the plane into something, had second thoughts, and ditched the plane rather than face the consequences of an aborted "mission"? Just top-of-the-head speculation, of course.

That would be a much too logical conclusion for the NTSB to draw.

A former EgyptAir captain, Hanofy Taha Mahmoud Hamdy, said the crash was an act of revenge against an EgyptAir executive, the Los Angeles Times reported Lol. For being reprimanded for "sexual misconduct"?
There were a lot of high-ranking Egyptian military on that plane. Now, what faction in Egypt would be interested in taking these particular people out?
You'll never see a proper criminal investigation into this in Egypt. Not as long as Mubarak is in power.

You nailed it. The Egyptian officers were going home after being trained by the US military. They were a perfect target for terrorists. The co-pilot was a sleeper or recent convert to the radical cause.

Early press accounts said there were a number of Egyptian military officers (pilots, as I recall) on their way home from training in the U.S. A valuable target for a saboteur. Egypt's military has been pretty harsh on the Islamists. This was revenge.

He was sent by bin Laden to down the plane in retaliation for the indictment handed down hours earlier for the suspects in the case of the Pan Am flight bombed over Lockerbie. Egypt's President Mubarak personally promised Khadafy that if he handed the two suspects over to the international court for trial, no others would be charged with the crime, yet the wording of the indictment included the phrase "and others." It was an Islamic suicide terrorist attack.

I guess I am vaguely interested in seeing this properly investigated, but then again...NAHHH.
Why shouldn't the West, however, make it easy on itself?
I would just deny landing rights to any plane from any Moose Limb country.
I would cease doing trade with them.
I would deny ALL visas to Western nations, for each and every category of visa, and each and every reason and plea.
I would recall all diplomats, and blow up all our embassies so they would be COMPLETELY without plumbing and lighting.
Preserve status quo relations with the least-repulsive nation in OPEC that can satisfy our need for dinosaur-juice, then, to Hell with the rest.
They will all be in a world of hurt in no time, because the Moose Limbs as a subspecies are BOTH too stupid and too lazy to run machinery, operate hospitals, build anything more complex than a tent, and litigate or engage in contracts with the rest of the world.
They are totally helpless without Whitey.
We should capitalize on this and seriously alter our treaties with these goons.
Then all this terrorist crap would stop, and they would go away for another couple hundred years, as they did after the Ottoman Empire fell.
The whole world is being way to permissive with these primitive a$$holes.
We don't need their business, their so-called minds, their barbaric cultures (especially their crappy singing and music) their paltry inventions, their next-to-nonexistent contributions to the rest of the world.
We especially don't need their B.O., lice, and hairiness.
I say start shunning the a$$holes totally.
NOT through the UN.
Bush should just start making phone calls around the world, and have these animals' nuts in a vise in about a week.
Now that's statesmanship!

The more I read about this case, the more I'm convinced it was an immediate response to the ruling on the Pan Am Flight 300 court ruling and a rehearsal for 9-11.
